NELSON PROVINCIAL CONVENTION.

The third Nelson Provincial ton* vention was opened bv the President, Mrs T. A. Field at y. 30 a.m. on September 17 in the Methodist Hall. Delegates were present from Richmond, Wakefield, Blenheim, Wakapu aka, Nelson, and Nelson Vs. Apologies received Horn Picton and Motueka. Secretary’s report was read and adopted. protests against the proposal to establish a woman’s prison at Point Halswell, Wellington, as no expenditure would make it possible to carry out on that site the employment of the women in small out-of-door industries, which are an essential part ot all modern reformative treatment.”

Resolved: “That a committee, representing the l nmns of the district, he formed to take an active interest in the Home for Defective Girls at Richmond."

Decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Don in her recent illness. Fetters of sympathy also to he sent to Mrs Morrison and the friends of the late Mrs Say well.

Reports showed 12: names on the (radio Roll; 127 roll number of the F.T.L., and more could be done if more help were forthcoming; Good Citizenship having a very hard time to keep working; “White Ribbon showed progress, but out of IG t members, only 40 were “White Ribbon subscribers, and -Mrs White appealed for more support for our paper. Mrs Telenius, Wakefield, President, stated that every member of her Union was a subscriber to the ‘‘Whitt’ Ribbon. ’

Blenheim repotted 150 names on the F.T F. roll, and also a flourishing Cradle Roll. Moral and Social Hygiene reported that Nelson has a library of 50 books or. this and other subjects, which arc lent to members free. Noontide devotions conducted by Mrs Telenius. Miss Knapp gave report of V Union. Resolved: “That the X.Z. Executive and the N.Z. Convention be asked to discuss the follow ing proposal: ‘That statutory provision should he made for a certain number of seats to be

Convention be requested to 4on*idrr the ad visabilitx of asking that the law be altered so as to give the residents in counties the same suffrage rights as the residents in boroughs now enjov.” AFTERNOON SESSION Mrs Hill opened the afternoon ses sion with devotions, 20 delegates and several visitors piesent. Treasurer’s report read and adopted. The follow ing recommendation was moved to the officers: “That the i<)2o Nelson Pro vim ial Convention be held in October if convenient.” It was decided to hold iq2o Convention in Nelson. Offi cers elected: Pres.’, Mrs T. A. Field; Rec. Sec., Mrs Harford; Cor. Set., Mrs Wilkinson; Treas., Mrs G. While. Resolved: “That the W.C.T.U. de sires to enter a strong protest against the proposal to require youths of 18 vears of age to s|>end ton 1 months of the year continuously in camp, and if it is a fact that there is a necessity for the systematic physical training »»f youths, this Union is of the opinion that this should not be in any way associated with ‘militarism,’ but that better provision should be made in this direction in connection with tiepublic schools.” Resolved: “That this meeting of the Nelson Provincial Convention strongly supports the Teachers’ Institute in their request that free medical and dental treatment be granted to all school children.”

Resolved: “That this Convention considers it advisable to write to Mrs Neal.
