HAULING DOWN THE FLAG
(To the Editor.) Dear Mrs Penman, —i have been surprised more tnun once lately upon nearing that a Union which had been doing well had quietly disbanded. I'ernaps tnese Iriends uo not look .it it lust as 1 do, but to me this savours of disloyalty to the cause. Whenever our work i> started in a locality the honour of the White Ribbon Han is entrusted to the members, ana to calmly haul it down is to surrender to the enemy. If ihosc discourag'd friends would communicate with the District Union, or even write to tut* N.Z. Corresponding Secretary, some help might be sent them, and the in terest revived. Some years ago the Invercargill District Union dwindled down until onlv about three or tour attended the meetings. 1 was President at the tune, and sometimes tin* thought would obtrude that we should drop the work. Put almost immediately l would say to myself, “No, 1 will never do tnat while one other woman will stand by me.” So we kept hold unlit. in a few years, our membership totalled more titan that of any other l mon in New Zealand, with one exception. but suppose we had n i go then! It is extremely doubitul wnetuer, in that case, No-License would nave been carried in Invercargill. mere is a time m evei\> j>ranch when the tide ebbs and tne interest liags. that is tne time wnen we show what stult we are made ui. it is easy to be brave wnen the band plays and the regiment is noo ning victoriously. It is when me iiuic garrison is beleaguered by an overwhelming force uiat heroic needs are done. lust now it is everywhere difficult .to keep up the interest in our woik, when Hearts and hands are lull in connection with the war, but don t let go, sisters! if you do, you will deeply regret it when the election nears and we are lighting tor National Prohibition without the three-fifths handicap. —Yours for the “One Win One” campaign, MARY S. POWELL, Dominion Organiser.
