WHEN WAR STEPS IN LIQUOR MUST STEP OUT.
In common with France, England, Germany, and Russia, Canada is protecting the soldier from the evil effort- or liquor drinking. At Camp Yalcarti* r, where were encamped the 32,000 soldo rs of the army before they sailed for England, all but soft drinks were strictly prohibited. Vcdka Barred Indefinitely. So satisfactory are the results of barring vodka from the Russian Army that the Mini-ter of Finance has recrived an oilier to the effect that the prohibition of the sale of vodka shall be continued indefinitely after the end of the war. According to the ‘.‘Chicago Tribune,” ‘‘ This order is based principally on the tremendous improved condition of the country since the Emperor issued the edict prohibiting traffic in this liquor. No Lcngcr Indolent. “Pea-ants who before the war had fallen into hopeless indolence and depravity already have emerged into selfrespccting citizens. The effect on character i- already visible in neatly bru bed clothes instead of the former ragged and slovenly attire. Huts which formerly were dilapidated and allowed to go without repairs are nowkept in first-class condition. Will Hava Important Effect. “The towns have become more orderly and the peasants indulge in wholesome amusements. These people nowsave fifty live | er cent of their earnings, which formerly was spent for drink, and they have increased their earning i.ipacity through sobriety. This extra money 1- now devoted to the nece-sitie- and comforts of life.”
