NOTABLE DAYS REPORT.

I regret that only fourteen of out; Cnions have forwarded me reports of Notable Days observed. Last year twenty-one report'd. 1 feel 1 am somewhat to blame ior the falling off, for. ow ing to a year of very strenuous work, 1 have not given this Department of work the* time and attention its importance demands. 1 sincerely hope my successor may have more time to devote to it. ChtUnchurch reports that Frances Willard Day was celebrated by Miss Roberts reading an excellent paper on “The* Life of Frances Willard up to \ i years of age*,’’ and giving a graphic ac c ount c f Miss W ijlard’s early years. This was followed by a paper read by Mrs Wicks who pointed out how her own life had been influenced bf Ibe lit' and WOI k of Fl am CS Wll lard. A collection in aid of “World’s Missionary Fund.” Taylor Memorial Day observed on July 22nd. Rev Williams gave a splendid address on the* life* and work of Mr Taylor, which was followed by a comprehensive and inspiring address on the same theme bv Miss Roberts. Speeches were also made* by Mrs McKee, Mrs Newton and Mrs Lovell Smith on the influence of our great leader’s life and work. Franchise Day celebrated at a Public meeting in connection with Provincial Convention. Mrs K. W. Sheppard gave .1 short ketch of the Franchise Movement, and 1 aid a great tribute to Sir |ohn Hall and Mr Vlfred Saunders who undertook to piiot the* “Women’s Franchise Bill” through the House. Mrs Don. N.Z. President, also addressed the* gathering and testified to the* broadening effect the* movement h id had on the* lives of women. Invercargill celebrated “White Ribbon Day” in connection with “Welcome Home and Ser ial” to Mrs LeeCowie, by holding an afternoon meeting at which a special address was given bv Rev Henderson on “Women’s Franchise.”

Warkworth reports celebrating “Franchise Day” by holding a Social Afternoon at “Kid Bluff,” when a collection was taken up for N.Z. Fund. Ngaere celebrated “Frances Willard Day by holding picnic , when a paper was read by District Secretary and other addresses given. Collection for World’s Missionary Fund. “Franchise Day” also commemorated by a special meeting, to which non-mem-bers were invited. Pahiatua observed “Frances Willard Day” on February iqth. The President read a paper on the life and work of our great leader, Frances W illard. Collection tor World’s Missionary Fund. 12s. “White Ribbon Day,” lune iNth. Home* Meeting held, when the President spoke on our “W.R.” paper, and also explained our Maori work. Collection for Maori Organising Fund, ss. “T. K. Taylor Day” Mils commemorated by holding a Home Meeting at which Re v Richards gave an address on “The Fife* and Work of T. K. Taylor.” Collection for N 7,.

Organising Fund, 10s. “Franchise Day,” September 7th. At an afternoon home meeting, Mrs Peryman gave a splendid address on “Women’s Responsibilities as C itizens.” One new member initiated. Collection for N.Z. Fund, £< 3d. A Public Meeting was held in evening, when Mrs Peryman spoke on “A White Ribboner’s Ideal of Patriotism.” The Mayor, Mr |. D. C. Cre we, presided. “Pahiatua Herald” printed report as sent. N. Z. Alliance literature distributed at close of meeting. Bluff reports having celebrated two Notable Days, viz., “Franchise Day” and “T. K. Taylor Day.” At both meetings suitable papers were read and muc h enjoyed. Pa.lmersiOn North cclebrated “Franchise Day,” when Mrs Crabbc gave a very interesting paper on “Women’s Franc hise. ” " I. F. Taylpr I )aji" was commemorated by an afternoon meeting. Nelson held a Public Meeting to celebrate “Franchise Day,” when addresses were given in reference to the Franchise Movement in N.Z. Collection for Maori Fund. Timaru.— This Cnion reports commemorating “T. K. Taylor Day, ” when the President gave an account of Mr Taylor’s work. “Franchise Day” was also reported- the president read an account of “How We Won the Franchise.’” Rangiora held a combined meeting in Institute Hall on “T. K. Taylor Memorial Day,” when Mi J. Me Combs, M.P. and Mr }. IF Blackwell gave inspiring addresses. New Plymouth observed three of the* Notable Days. On “Willard Day” a picnic was held at the members’ grounds. Addresses by Rev Roseveare and Mr Cocker. 1 wo new members secured and one b.by enrolled. “White Ribbon Day” was celebrated, w hen a large gathering was present; very interesting address by Miss (iustud. One new member enrolled. Collection taken up. “Franchise Day” an interesting address by Rev Chappell on “Women’s Franchise.” Col lection taken up, and one new member enrolled. “T. K. Taylor Day.” No special meeting he ld, but reference made to our great leader at ordinary meeting. Waimale reports commemorating “T. F.. Taylor Day” by a special Memorial Service. Mr. Taylor’s favourite hymns were sung and after Sc ripture reading and prayer the president gave a most helpful address, drawing many lessons from Mr Taylor’s noble* life and triumphant death. A large framed photograph of the* late Mr Taylor was decorated with a laurel wreath. “Frances Willard Day” was also remembered, when the president spoke on the life work of our founder, after which Mrs Rule, of Timaru, gave a paper. Music and afternoon tea. Collection, 14s, for World’s Fund. Winchmcre was unfortunate in having wet weather which prevented any special celebration of Notable Days.

They w ere referred to at ordinary meetings. On “Temperance Sunday,” however, a special temperance Sermon was preached by Rev Woolloxall, and pledges were taken in the Sunday School. Ashburton commemorated “T. E. Taylor Day” by an after Church rally in Theatre Royal, which was attended by quite (kx> people. Mrs Don, our N.Z. President, gave* a most helpful and inspiring address or “Influence,” and in the course of her remarks spoke of tlie* great influence for good the* life e,f Mr Taylor had been. Singing led by combined choirs. Ministers of all denominations on platform. Splendid meeting. No special meeting to celebrate Franchise* Day, as we had l)r Sheldon that month, but at the banquet tendered to the Rev gentleman, Mrs Fill, in responding to a toast, spoke* at some length of the* benefits we had received through having the T ran- < bite* “White Ribbon I ).i\.” \ spec ial appeal for new subsc ribers, which bore* fruit. Many spoke* of excellence of our paper and its helpful articles. “Frances Willard Day.” Miss Kershaw, M.A., President of the “Y” branc h gave a very fine address to the young women at their meeting. This meeting was attended by many members of the mother branch. On “Temperance Sunday” special Temperance sermons were preached in most of the Churches in our town, and the congregation appealed to, to “do the* right” on polling elav. M. A. WATSON, N.Z. Supt.
