CARNIVAL.

The Carnival Committee at Timaru decided, for the sum of /ioo, to allow a licensed booth on the Show Ground during the Carnival. Strong protests were entered against their action, and /70 collected and handed to the Committee. At the* last minute the proposal to have a licensed booth was withdrawn. The W .C.T.I . of Timaru sent the following protest, and W aim.tie I’nion also protested:— “We, the members of the Timaru Branch of the Women’s Christian Icinperance I’nion, indignantly protest against the ac tion of the Carnival Committee* in arranging for a licensed booth on the Show Grounds on Thursday next. We are shocked that the Carnival Committee should propose increased facilities for drinking and drunkenness, at this time of national peril, when Britain and her Allies are placing restrictions on the sale' o intoxicants, and discouraging drinking on the part of soldiers and civilians in avery possible way. “We consider the action of the Carnival Committee specially reprehensible in view of the fact that School Committees were circularised asking them to close the* schools and give facilities to the children to attend the Carnival. “In the interests of the women and children especially we call upon the Carnival Committee to cancel the arrangements in connection with the licensed booth , so that many may not be constrained to keep away by reason of this proposed menace*, and that all may be able to work together for the success of the effort. “We further express our conviction that public opinion in the* town and district is decidedly against the proposal to have a. licensed booth.”
