K. OF K. PLEDGE.
Convention decided to have 20,000 K. of K. pledges printed, and urge? I nions to start a pledge-signing campaign. We believe there is a tide in the affairs of great movements which, taken at the flood, leads on to success, and we firmly believe that now is such a tide in the affairs of the- Temperance movement. On all sides, and in every nation, leaders arc* urging abstinence from alcohol during this time of national crisis. Employers say that workmen arc inefficient because* of the taint of strong drink. Our soldiers at the* front arc* needing arms and ammunition, and the supply i> lessened because their fellow-workmen at home* arc* spending time- and lc*s. selling their efficiency at the- publichouse. Mr Lloyd (ieorge >;i\s that strong drink is a greater menace to the* British Empire than Herman submarines. Kitchener is urging soldiers to lx* total abstainers because their country needs them at their best, and this great soldier is setting the example be- banishing the enemy from his own household. Is it fa'r to ask. soldiers to deny themselves while civilians arc* free to indulge their taste* for strong drink? Many feel it is not so, and are willing to take the* pledge* till the close of the* war. Never has there been such an opportunity to got moderate drinkers to try the* benefit of total abstinence. Will all Unions press this matter, and get everybody they can to sign the* K. of K. pledge? Manv who take this pledge* till close* of the war will be so pleased with its beneficial effect, both on their health and their pocket, that thev will never go b uk to moderate drinking again. Let every worker lx* on tlx* alert to secure as many pledges as possible. The pledge is got up very neatly in booklet form, and Unions can purchase them for 3d per dozen, either from Mrs Dearlovc, Lincoln Road, Napier, or from the “White Ribbon,” Johnsonville.
