New Whakairo Symbols Planned
N G A WHAKAHUA
Greg Matahi Whakataka Brightwell is pioneering new developments in whakairo. He’s come up with new carving symbols to replace English letters and numbers. He says he’s been working on the project since 1982, a time when he was well underway with the carving of Hawaiikinui. The whakairo symbols come from a book he hopes to have published this year. A selection of these are reproduced here to give an indication of what the effect will be.
