Travelling in Parkland

In this drawing George French Angas records the vegetation and terrain between the Waipa River and Taupo. On the right he includes his two guides, Rihia who was a native of the Waipa and Te Pera who hailed from the Bay of Islands. Both companions accompanied Angas for the duration of the trip.

On the left is a tributory of the Waipa. In the background are the volcanoes Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Tongariro was tapu and access to it was forbidden by Te Heuheu of the Ngati Tuwharetoa. Even sketching the mountain was ruled out. Here near Tutukamauna, Angas felt at liberty to sketch the volcanic peaks as he was in

another tribal area, that of the Maniapoto. Like all travelling in old Aotearoa, there were stretches along the way that taxed the nerves and nimbleness of Pakehas who walked these ancient tracks because of the direct way in which the paths tackled physical barriers by a head-on approach.
