IN RESPONSE TO REQUESTS FROM THE NEW ZEALAND PUBLIC. CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE ARMS ACT. These changes retain the freedom of the legitimate individual shooter, while imposing greater control and restraint over the unlawful use of firearms. From 1 June 1984 all shotgun and rifle owners or users aged 16 or over, and airgun owners or users aged 16 and 17, require a personal firearms licence. Once allowed a licence, these responsible, legitimate shooters will be able to buy, borrow or use these firearms without reference to the Police. This replaces the old system of owners registering individual rifles or obtaining shotgun permits. So if you, or a member of vour household, have or use a firearm, or if there is a firearm in your home that you wish to keep, a firearms licence is now required. Applications are now being processed, so be sure that you are included before the deadline of 31 January 1985. Application forms and information leaflets are readily available from Post Offices, Police Stations, arms dealers and other convenient locations throughout New Zealand. Make your application today! ARMS LICENCE llg < ZEALAND MEW ZEALAND f <■ An arms amnesty is being held during this licensing period. If there is a firearm in your household that nobody wants any longer, it can be sold to a firearms dealer or licensed firearms owner, or simply handed in to any Police Station without fear of prosecution. Don't just leave it lying around. If, after 31 January 1985, you have a firearm in your possession and you don't have a firearms licence you are committing an offence. Contact your nearest Police Project Foresight Liaison Officer or Police Arms Officer if you require further information. dcwso4oi DCW 30401
