Hui Aranga
Catholic Maori Clubs from all over Aotearoa gathered at Porirua College over Easter weekend to participate in the Maori Catholic Hui Aranga. The word ‘ARANGA’ means ‘RISING’, and the Hui Aranga is a celebration of the rising of Jesus Christ from the dead, although the first day is one of mourning and rememberance of the agony and death Christ suffered. The hui has been held in towns and cities around the country, from Tokoroa in the north of the North Island to Motokaraka and Christchurch in the South Island, since 1946. The only year in which no hui was held was 1956. The competing clubs are divided into three sections;
SENIORS JUNIORS Under 21 years of age except the leader may be older. MIDGETS Under 13 years of age but the leader may be older. The competitions themselves are divided and judged as follows; 1. CHOIRS Must have at least nine members and no more than 24, excluding the conductor, who must be Maori. After the test piece is sung the choir must say a Catholic prayer in Maori. 2. SACRED SOLOS Own selection, but club captain’s approval of choice is required. Competitors must be 16 years or over. Winners of previous year may not compete. Separate places to be given to men and women. Each club must enter only a man OR a woman.
3. ORATORY (BOTH OPEN GRADES AND JUNIORS, MEN AND WOMEN.) All speeches must be in Maori. Clubs may enter one man and one woman in the open grades, and one junior man and one junior woman. Speakers may speak on any Catholic subject. 4. QUIZ 5. RUGBY 6. NETBALL 7. TENNIS 8. TABLE TENNIS 9. ACTION SONG Seniors and Juniors teams of at least nine and not more than 24, excluding the two instrumentalists. Junior and Midget teams must give ‘block’ performances (no entrances or exits). Words of Action songs must make reference to the meaning of the Hui Aranga. 10. POI Teams as with action song. Junior and Midget performances as with action song. Boys or men may accompany a poi with a chant, but the poi performers must not be less than nine, and the total number of poi performers and chanters must
not exceed 24 for Junior and Senior teams. 11. HAKA Teams as with action song and poi. ‘Block’ performances for Juniors and Midgets as with action song. Any type of haka permitted. 12. SPORTS AND CLUB PARADE Points awarded for uniformity and discipline. 13. FALL IN FOR RELIGIOUS PROCESSION Points awarded as for Sports parade. 14. PATERE Open grade. Teams of at least nine and not more than 24. Patere must last no longer than three minutes.
The competitions, held at night, were the highlight of the whole weekend. The performances were held in this order; GOOD FRIDAY NIGHT: Midget action songs, poi and haka. Choirs. Sacred Solos. HOLY SATURDAY NIGHT: Junior action songs, poi and haka. EASTER SUNDAY NIGHT: Quiz. Senior Action songs, poi and haka. Also held on Easter Sunday night was a disco. The band was a reggae group, and was thoroughly enjoyed. On Easter Monday everything ended with the handing over of the Statue of Our Lady, to the group, St Vincent’s who will host the Hui Aranga next year, in Wanganui.
