Multi-national returns artefacts

Two valuable Maori artefacts have been returned to New Zealand under unusual circumstances. A taiaha and mere were bought from private collections in Holland by the large multi-national company, Philips Electrical. Maui Pomare, a member of the National Museum Trust Board saw the artefacts on a recent travel Fellowship overseas. He approached the company to see if the taiaha and mere could be purchased. Mr Pomare says the items are at least 100 years old but their origins are unknown. ‘‘They are both very good

pieces”.
