Acquisitions of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture are listed selectively in the Turnbull Library Record to alert scholars to newly acquired material judged to be of research value. Only original works and significant engravings and prints are included; photomechanical reproductions recently published are excluded. A three-quarter length portrait of writer John Brodie who wrote under the pseudonym John Guthrie. Samuel Williams’ home at Pukehou, Hawkes Bay. purchase. beatson, william, 1808-1870. [Architectural plans of buildings in England and Nelson, 1830-18605.] Ink, pencil and watercolour. A major collection of early plans, especially interesting for its plans of early Nelson houses and commercial buildings, donation: Mr Patrick Beatson, Takaka. earle, Augustus, 1793-1838. War speech previous to a naval expedition. London, Martin, 1838. Lithograph, hand-coloured. A rare example of an early lithograph by Earle, showing Maori setting off to make war against other iwi. purchase. elliot, Robert james, 1790-1849. Queen Pomare’s residence at Oparrea, Tahiti, 1822 with her husband ’s tomb in the same enclosure [and] Huahine, Society Islands, January 1822. 2 pencil drawings. Captain Elliot visited Tahiti briefly in January 1822 as part of a trip to South America and Australia. These two drawings were the basis for later engravings and have also been copied in oils, but contain some additional details lacking in the later copies. PURCHASE. gold, Charles emilius, 1803-1871. loney, alan perress, b. 1940. [ Archive of works on paper, 19705-19905.] Various media. Original drawings and samples of fine prints by a range of artists, used to illustrate Loney’s printing projects over the past 20 to 30 years, purchase. meade, Herbert, 1842-1868. PaiMariri karakia, held by the Te Haufanatics at Tataroa, New Zealand, to determine the fate of their prisoners. Jan. 27th 1865. Watercolour. The artist’s view of himself and his Maori guide as Hauhau prisoner in the Waikato. He survived the experience and published his account of his adventures in New Zealand, as A ride through the disturbed districts of New Zealand (London, 1870). purchase. A small view of a seaside township on the outskirts of Christchurch, looking east along its main street, purchase. stones, anthony, b. 1933. [Bronze head of Janet Frame, 1999.] Bronze, donation: The Friends of the Turnbull Library, commissioned from the sculptor. tylee, EDITH palmer, 1839-1914. [Sketchbook, 1850-1880S.] A commonplace book put together by Edith Taylor (nee Tylee), the wife of Rev. Basil Kirk Taylor. It includes copies of poems and watercolours of European and New Zealand scenes, by a range of artists, donation: Mrs R. B. Taylor, Rotorua. WHITE, g. w. Halcione, Lyttelton Pleads, N. Z. [between 1870 and 1888], Watercolour. A portrait of an early sailing ship, a regular visitor to New Zealand between 1870 and 1888. purchase.
