Michael Bassett has taught in the History Department at the University of Auckland, and in 1992-93 was J. B. Smallman Professor at the University of Western Ontario, where he teaches on a regular basis. He is the author of a number of books on New Zealand politics and history, most recently biographies of two New Zealand prime ministers, Sir Joseph Ward: A Political Biography (Auckland, 1993) and Coates ofKaipara (Auckland, 1995). Dr Bassett was an MP for 15 years, and served as Minister of Health, Internal Affairs, Local Government, and Arts and Culture in the Fourth Labour Government between 1984 and 1990. He is currently working on a history of the Department of Internal Affairs.
Harry Evison has specialised in the colonial history of the Southern Maori and was familiar with the Mitchell Library’s ‘Wentworth Indenture’ when its prodigal twin was acquired in London for the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1993. He is at present writing a biography of Walter Mantell.
Phil Parkinson joined the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1975 and now holds the position of Senior Librarian, Enhanced Subject Access Projects. He has been working on the Early Maori Imprint Project, to upgrade the control over and access to the Library’s Printed Maori Collection, since 1993.
Rhys Richards has written a dozen books and over fifty articles, mainly on Pacific maritime history before 1840. Two of his books were published in July: Foveaux Whaling Yarns of Yankee Jack (Dunedin, 1995) and Murihiku Re-viewed (Wellington, 1995). The third in this trilogy, Wellington’s First Pakehas, is to be published later this year.
Sarah Shieff is a lecturer in the English Department at the University of Waikato. Her main research interest is the relationship between music, poetry, and national identity. Recent publications include articles on cultural nationalism in New Zealand poetry, and on the percussion ensemble From Scratch.
Sheila Williams was on the staff of the Alexander Turnbull Library from 1961 until 1979. She is currently a lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Studies, Victoria University of Wellington.
