Mr Wiremu Hape Taipana The death occurred last August of Mr Wiremu Hape Taipana, an elder of Arowhenua, Temuka. He was aged 74. He was the elder son of Hana Kaikoro and Te Hape Taipana of Ngati Rongomai, a sub-tribe of Ngati Mamoe. During the First World War he served in France as a member of the Pioneer Maori Battalion. For many years he worked in the building trade, working in many different parts of the Island and living for 20 years in Wellington. He returned to Arowhenua in 1953 and interested himself in the affairs of the community. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs Thompson of Wairoa and Mrs J. Henderson of Tinwald, and by his brother, Mr Charles Taipana of Arowhenua.
