The Stupids are to release an EP on Roadshow early next year. In the meantime, they appear on the forthcoming Wildside compilation Raw... according to the official Wildside press release: 'After an amicable mutual agreement, guitarist Riqi Hadfield has left the ■ Dead Rowers.' The band will operate as a fourpiece. and have already recorded six new demos at Zoo Studio in Hamilton ... JOHN RUSSELL HAMILTON The Fridge is the name of the new Hamilton music compilation, which will be out on October 5, with a CD. release party at the Hillcrest Tavern. Bands playing include Boil Up, Inchworm, Dean, The Widdershins. Tsunami Band, MSU, and Hand of Glory ... Avant Garbage released their new 70minute long tape at a gig recently. You can buy it from the Contact 89FM office ... the Romantic Andes have been recording for an album on Hark records. Also recording for Hark recently or in the near future are Fat Mannequin and John Michaels and the Stone Babies ... busy local musician Tim Armstrong is standing, for council in the local body elections, and has a new album out ... Greg Page is making yet another music video, this time for Love and Violence ... NIHIL, the winners of the Contact 89FM Battle of the Bands are now distributed by Hark records, as are Department of Correction who, incidentally, took out second place at said battle ... the winning band of the recent Ist Annual Spatula Death Battle of the Bands was, surprisingly enough, Spatula Death. They now have a cassette out, just to give us a nibble ... the Canterbury town of Geraldine isn't known for much but the garbage and the tearooms, and now for King Records. It is this small vinyl pressing plant that is giving us a chance to hear the recorded efforts of Wellingtonians Lobe of Lung and Satina Saturnina ... the recent ■Composing Women's Festival gave us the opportunity to hear Tuahine, a Pacific soul/funk band originating from Porirua and the Hutt Valley ... Keegan are a Celtic-influ-enced band who have committed their tearjerkers and foot-stompers to a CD, Live at Kitty (the name of the CD, not something they do) ... Private Christgau are the best band in the galaxy. They’ll do anything, man ... what shall we do with Truckstop? They have created a beast that will not be tamed. Radio Massey 99.4 FM almost has it's new studio, about ' four months later than originally planned. Their biggest and best Kiwi Music Week hits the airwaves and stage from October 9 to October . 15 ... since last month, Blunt have reformed and will be playing gigs again soon. The first gig will be in Wellington at The Oaks on October 19, with local mates CUNT (Claires Un-natural Twin, to the conservatively minded) and Human from Christchurch ... Froithead have sadly lost their guitarist Blair Wotton, who seems to be happy concentrating on Cannibal Sex Kicks ... just about every band in the lower North Island has played at the Mountain Rock auditions and we don't know who has been selected yet ... Maybe it's the change in the weather... a bit of radio news: Radio One seems to have had a staff transplant of late. The new manager is Grant Millman, who until recently was programme director at 93 Rox. Radio One is having its annual. New Zealand Music Week, starting October 9. Features should include daily live to air broadcasts, an end of the week gig by Head Like a Hole and Swarm, and a CD release gig for the IMD Compilation Disturbed which is due out on October 9 ... Polyp are putting out a single on Dutch label Rotten Windmill. They, the ultimate boys band, are curious to hear of an all girl band of the .same name from Nelson. Swarm’s debut album, Forever Bled Hollow (IMD), has finally arrived, two weeks after the release gig at the Empire ... new jazz bands including Smoodiver (Big Brough Band plus one), Finger and Nimbus, who have popped up with performances in Fuel cafe and the back bar of The Empire ... Michael Morley is soon to release a solo album, The. Pavilion of Fools, to be released by Precious Metal ... Yellow Eye Records have been busy. Funhouse have been making more videos and the CD Roy is out now. They are to tour this month. The T and D Bigger Band has also been recording. Coming soon is a jazz compilation and a CD by Love Consort. More projects on line. Simon Vare from the label is to run Failsafe while Rob Mayes is overseas ... Smirky played again after a long break at a recent Rad One gig. The band now features Gareth Reeves (ex-Ex Pistols) on bass ... New band 78 RPM debuted recently. Featuring John Howell (Too Many Daves) and Chontene Nathan,' the band hopes to tour soon. A single featuring Chontene singing with Bob Scott is out on some obscure European label ... the Renderers are off on a national tour to promote their CD That Dog's Head in the Gutter . Gives Off Vibrations. Their new CD will also be released on Ajax in a few months ... Fish Street recording studio is on the move, due to asbestos being found lurking around. Sleeping Giant have taken over the old Iron Pot and have a format similar to their Havelock premises, thus providing another venue for solos and small bands Mossy’s are having specialist Wednesdays with original music the first Wednesday of the month, poets and storytellers the last Wednesday, with blues and special guests in between. Recent performer was hometown boy turned country star Glen Moffatt... Hawkes Bay gatherings the second Tuesday of each month at O'Flaherty’s ... busy. at' the moment is Hannay, with Hanging Tree Records about to release tapes by Mellow Thumb, Static Black, Hanging Tree and a compilation of Hawkes Bay music. Proceeds from sales are going towards getting a CD released of Hawkes Bay material ... Hanging Tree are about to play their first Hawkes Bay gig in a year, and a half at the October Originals Night, while in a stranger than fiction situation, a death-metal band fronted by Kevin Borich’s son has been discovered operating in Australia under the name Hanging Tree. Efforts are being made ,to change this. Hannay is also branching out into print with a free magazine concerning the arts and music in Hawkes Bay, to be titled SAY. Any contributions are welcome ... also recording at Hanging Tree studios is new band Vaccine, with Andy Cummins on vocals, Jeff Boyle on guitar, Matt Emery on bass and Justin Johnson on drums.
