A DISTURBANCE IN DUNEDIN

The increasingly high profile Dunedin label IMD, release their first compilation album this month. Disturbed features 17 previously unreleased tracks from more established local musicians such as Martin Phillipps, Robert Scott, and Jay Clarkson, to newer outfits like Cloudboy, HDU, and Suka. According to Bruce Blucher, guitarist with Trash, who contribute the track ‘Hurting’, Disturbed is an almost-spot-on reflection of the state of Dunedin music.

“There are some sounds missing, but it is a pretty good representation of what’s happening here. It’s nice and relevant to right now, and a sign of things to come I think.” Although still a relatively new independent, IMD has released albums by Sandra Bell, Cyclops, The Builders, Gate, and Swarm, and future projects include releases from Trash and Suka. Norma O’Malley of Chug, whose song Viva’ is the opening track on Disturbed, has been involved in the Dunedin scene since the early 80s, and believes IMD is proving itself invaluable to local musicians.

“IMD have definitely filled a gap. They’re not trying to take over where anyone’s left off, they’re just into supporting local music, and making it possible for young bands to get into a studio without having to have megabucks. There’s so many bands here, and now they’re getting a chance to get their records released.”
