Poets Kim Blackburn and Sandra Bell have LPs out soon. Blackburn’s (Lizards in Love) on Flying Nun, and Bell’s (Blackbirds) on Volcanic ... check out the 1948 Wurlitzer jukebox at the Java Jive cafe. On loan for a month, it plays 78s of Charlie Parker et al while flashing lights galore. With a large crowd in attendance, reminiscent of the “old” Zanzibar, we can hope this will become a regular event... and while on the varsity scene, we can expect a change in Orientation for next year, as this year’s produced a $20,000 loss that is still being looked into.
The Venue (Youth Centre) are trying to boost their finances by holding weekly discos. Coming up at the Venue is Shona Laing and the Bats double bill, Dread Beat and Blood and a high school bands war.
Murder Inc have just finished a three week mini-residency at the Marine Tavern, and are now confirming dates in Wellington and Auckland for early September...
World’s Apart are now resident at the Dux Delux and incorporating an acoustic jazz set to their repertoire; keep an eye out for a few line-up changes too. Flying Nun have had a setback with both the Verlaines and the Puddles latest having to be repressed as the first pressings were all buckled ... and it would appear Wolls master tape has been lost, causing a major setback. Amez-Amez have had better luck and have produced a very professional demo tape at Nightshift which could result in a single. New bands include Big Elvis (Charlie White, Wayne Beacroft, Wayne Jamieson, Alan Parks and Simon Darke), the Brat Brothers, Seven and Seven is, Max Block, the Riptoids, and Small Riflemin (Peter Sweeney, Grant Provost and
Glen Delderfield)... when Fat Sally split after spending a month in residence at the Blenheim Road, Keith Palmer teamed up with Kevin Emmett and Paul Mason. Emmett, Mason and Palmer lasted not much longer than a week before Fat Sally reformed with Kevin taking over drums ... congratulations to George from George and the Dragons who has recently become a father. Finally, our condolences to Debbie and the rest of Steve Cowan’s family. Steve, who was probably Timaru’s best-known musician, died on July 19. A memorial night was held at the Old Mill a few nights later, with a very large turnout paying their respects to Steve and his music. J. Greenfield

berry Studio as part of payment for the Strawberry sponsored orientation tour earlier this year. The studio is meanwhile to launch its own label. Chippendale House celebrates its first birthday with a multi-band extravaganza this month. Membership now numbers 500 plus three full-time staff, with new appointees David Kilgour, Stella Corkery and Mike Morley ... Rhythm Cocktail have released a cassette ... Luke Hurley plans a concept album based on Hamlet ... Gaumaunche, with new bassist and singer in tow, have evolved into the M00n... it has been bloody cold. The Cartiiidge Family Wellington Passing for Human are a new band playing original and innovative rock. They have been recording at Frontier and have strong connections with past Wellington bands such as Lot 49, Digits, Troy Tempest and Smashed Executive ... Strikemaster are currently rehearsing for a North Island tour and have been busy writing new material with their keyboard player who is a relatively new addition to the band. They have two tracks
on the forthcoming Attack From Down Under compilation. The Jonahs are a new band as are Vox Pop who will be making a bid for the popular opinion polls with ideas of covering some 60s sounds ... Jungle Mice, a threepiece with a stand-up drummer, have a live tape of a recent Cricketers gig which will be available sometime in September... Lionheart have put a temporary hold on their new album while a dispute with their record company is sorted out. The band, who describe their music as progressive rock, hope to be on the road again soon ... the Hutt Valley may soon be rocking again with the reopening of the Quinn’s Post for rock bands. Crawbilly Creeps will soon be touring and have a track, A Day in Lucky Gulch’ on the student radio compilation ... Primates have a mini-album coming up on Onset/Offset Records... ex Brothers Gorgonzola will continue in some new form and may soon link up with ? Fog for a tour... On a Weta have a new 7” called ‘Dance Little Children’ and has been described as "psychelectric new age dance” .. Just a Lie is a new Stuart Clews project.
