• The Clash have been busking in the North Of England (their first UK "gigs" in over a year), playing outside pubs and clubs and and staying with fans. • The Eurythmics have surfaced again with the release of their new album, Be Yourself Tonight, but live performances are some way off because of Annie Lennox’s voice problems. She is, however, making her film debut with Donald Sutherland and Al Pacino in Revolution. Meanwhile, Dave is producing Feargal Sharkey. • Jerry Lee Lewis is reportedly in hospital after collapsing with internal haemorrhaging. • The new venture for former Bronski guy, Jimmy Somerville, is called The Body Politic, after they weren’t allowed to called themselves the Committee.. • Police bassman Sting has recorded a jazzy LP, Dream Of the Blue Turtle, on which he plays guitar and sings. It includes a duet with Mark Knopfler. The band on the record will soon hit the road it includes Weather Report’s Omar Hakim (drums), Miles Davis Band’s Kenny Kirkland (keyboards). Brandon Marsalis (sax) and a couple of backing singers. Sting has now also tossed away the peroxide bottle for a new brunette look.

A major NZ tour is planned later this year... among NZers winning attention in the UK is manic poet David Eggleton, who was accorded a half page story and pic in the May 25 NME. Nice things were said about Eggleton and NZ music in general... the new Fetus Productions record is Luminous Trails, an eight-track collection recorded in Sydney over the past year and apparently representing a wide cross-section of material. The duo will wing off for Japan and Europe again in August-September.

South Islanders are likely to get a chance to see what all the fuss is about with possible southern tours later this year by Birds Nest Roys, Goblin Mix and Able Tasmans. The second issue of Aucklandbased fanzine One World is out. Big strides from the first ish and stories on locals Five Year Mission and Flesh D-Vice, as well as stuff from the USA, Italy, Canada, Denmark,*East Germany and Sweden and reviews. Crystal Zoom haye advanced their plan for world media domination another step by picking up former Mee Mees/lnfectious drummer Yoh. They’ll begin performing again at the end of this month, starting off with short sets ... Napier band Bedside Manner head off on their first North Island tour this month. They recently recorded their debut single, ’Belfast’, at Capture Studios this month ... Ohio band the Undefineables, who have been defined as“underground disco-techno-funk-pop" are expected to tour this country in August-September.

Arrangements for a multimedia show at the Maidment Theatre on July 34 and 24 are firming up. Performances will include music from This Kind Of Punishment, a play by david Clarkson, films by Brian Wills (with music by the Headless Chickens, aka Chris Matthews, Johnny Pierce and Michael Lawry). Tickets go on sale on July 1. $6 from Real Groovy Records or the Record Exchange ... Mark and Dieneke, formerly of Flak, are in Holland and have a band called If who have an EP due soon. James Murray (ex-Exploding Budgies) visted them recently and drummed when they played a gig as Flak, playing all old Flak material.
