DX NEWS FROM THE FOUR WINDS

| TARANASKI ALTHOUGH conditions have not been the best for DX, several good loggings have been made, but, as usual, the members’ reports have dropped. Where are all the newer members? Don’t forget a few details each month, fellows, so that our notes will continue to flourish. Members’ Reports. Miss Cousins (115T.) reports fair conditions with little DX. Has reports away to VK9MI, ZEWW, WiXAL, TPA4, and OLR4B. Veries. back: 2ZH, PCJ, VK2ME and VLR. Not so good this month, 115T., but at least you are showing the others the way to report. WELLINGTON HE ‘November meeting of the branch, . held on Monday, the 14th, was quite an historic one, a woman member, Miss Shierlaw, late of the Napier branch, stepping inte our midst, Fortunately the Best Veri Cup, the Wellington Cup miniature, and the Shortwave Cup had been presented to the winners the month before, leaving the boys cold sober this month and giving them a chance to put on their best behaviour. Miss Shierlaw appears to be a very enthusiastic member, and in view of the fact that she was leading in ali the broadcast competitions of the Napier branch, is likely to give our chaps a surprise at the close of our B.C. competitions in December. ° Over the period of the last five months I have received the immense total of four reports, not an average of one a month from members. Is this a fair go to the branch? Is it because you don’t like

the secretary? Let us have your views or reasons. We realise every Wellington member cannot get along to our meetings, but they can at least write to the branch and let us know their latest loggings, etc. If we cannot get any support from ‘members with notes, the Wellington notes will have to cease. It is up to you, chaps! The one report received is from Mr. Hamling, who reports broadeast loggings as follows:-6AM, 6IX, 4WK, 2CO, 4AY, 5AN. S.W.: VLR (25.26), CB1i7S, PCJ2, YDC. Veries:-B.C.: 38HA, 2LF, 3Lk, VLA, 2ZA, 8AK, 3SH, 8BA and CIRC (630 k.c.). S.W.: DZH, DJQ, 2ZB (6.96), PLP, TGWA, ZUP and JVH after 10 months. Thanks, Harry, you are our tower of strength. I have sat up and listened ta midnight Yanks, which are coming in here about R4-5, QSA3, but have heard nothing new. Veries include WAIM, VUD, 7HO and 5AD.

_ The Best Verie of the Month Competition for November, resulted as follows: H. Wickens, WAIM, 26 points, 1. R. Kelly, TGW, 23 points, 2. H. Hamling, CJRC, 22 points, 3. Progress Result of Tasman Cup. (One month to go.) R. Booeock 66, 1. H. Hamling 28, 2. L. Bardsley, 3. Well, chaps, please let us know before our next meeting on December 12, whether you want our local notes to continue, so that we can decide then whether we turn over a new leaf for the beginning of 1939 or hecome silent outside of our

meeting.-

___.NELSON HE American stations are commencing to appear round the broadcast dial early in the evening on this part of the West Coast, giving weak, but clear signals. As for Australian stations there is such a

jumble that it is impossible to log low-powered stations, . A reminder is given to dxers in the Nelson branch that the shortwave and broadcast competitions close on December 381, 1938. All verifications must be forwarded to secretary of the branch. The winners will hold the trophies for twelve months. I hope to meet a few of the Nel-~-son boys early in December to discuss future competitions and DX in general. One report to hand comes from 41N. Here are his main loggings and verifications. Reports out: HP5G, G5ML, F3GR, ON4D1, TI2ZAV, G6Wwx, PK2AY and SUWIM. Verifs.: OLR4B, OLR4A, HCJB, CSW, TI4, RNH, OAR4A, XU8ET and HC1iJW. That’s all for this month-M. G. Neighbours (39N.). SOUTHLAND VERY enjoyable meeting was held at Winton on November 5. Hight members journeyed from town and three from Nightcaps. One, of our country members had forgotten about the meeting and so was left behind. He told me after-

wards that he remembered when it was too late. The boys were in good form and voted it a most enjoyable evening. Those who never attend these country meetings don’t know what they are missing. So far the meetings have been well attended and it is good to see members taking a keen interes. again. Keep it up, boys. ' I wish to welcome a new member, in Mr. H. Shuttleworth. I hope he enjoys being with us and logs a few good ones. Competitions, The best of month was won by L. Warburton, with Station WIP (24 points). In the senior competition Mr. M. Branks is leading with 97 points, with Mr. R. Dowling, 82 points, in second place. In the junior, L. Warburton is leading with 78 points from Mrs. Brighton 72 points. In the new members’ competition L. Warburton has 78 points, with B. Allen second, 67 points. The Aussie three-monthly finds Messrs. Hunter and Warsurton with 19 points each and 7a. Thomas with 18 points. c Members Loggings. Bob has back WLAC, KPQ, KPMC, 2XL and VUM on B.C.; on S.W., LAIG. (Continued on page 39.)

PRESALE CUBA AE REEL CE TIS being our summer season, dxing here has not been what it should, although it could have been worse! During daytime dxing is practically impossible as QRM and QRN is terrific most of the time. At night DX picks up a little and some stations are heard with good signal strength. The 20-metre band shows good dxing with peak reception after midnight when many "hams" are heard providing good signals, specially VK’s and. KA’s. Hams. heard last month were: LUIQA, LU4CZ, HKIEF and HK3LC (both new), HH2B, VK2ADE, VK2BK, VK2HF, TIZRC and TT20OFR, HI9I, G2AI, GhGS, VE&XX, K6GAS, K6FQF, K6KGA, HR2A, ZLIBE, YN38DG, KA1YL, KA1ME, KAIZL, W8MRM, WiGEF, W20D, WE6LY, LU5SAN. There is a station on 9275 kc., using the call ZP8 "Radio Nacjonal’?" at Asuncion, Paraguay, South America, testing and requesting reports to be sent to Coro-~-nel Martinez, No. 274. It was heard from, 8.05 to 8.30 p.m. E.S,T. YN38DG which was heard as amateur, is the call of a new station using the slogan, "Hstacion Gilfillan" at Leon, Nicaragua, Central A America, on 7130 kc., heard from + 9.15 to 9.80 p.m, and signing off F with the paso-doble "El Relicario." Seems to be a commercial station with experimental licence.

LRA "Radio del Hstado" on 9685 k.c., is heard regularly in the evenings from 6.30 to 9 p.m., E.S.T. Tt is on top of LRX "Radio El Mundo," so do not he confused. Correct reports should be addressed to Oficina de Difusion, Palacio de Comunicaciones, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The University of Antioquia, in Medellin, Colombia, is transmitting

very interesting cultural programmes, with no advertisenients, through their own station HJ4ABU on 8653 kec., right under COJK, with best reception around 8.20 p.m. E.S.T. They request reports, to be sent to Apartado 217, Medellin, Colombia. R. F. Rubio (DX132 0.), Havana, Cuba.
