Bert Bailey Arrives Here
creator of the character of ‘‘Dad’’ in the ‘‘Dad and Dave’’ films, can’t see much reason for the fuss that has been made about whether these pictures are a bad advertisement for Australia. At one time there was talk of censorship to prevent any more being made, or at least to prevent them leaving the country. Actually all of them have got past the censor without difficulty. . "lve always failed to understand the point of view that these films might give overseas people a wrong idea about Australia and Australians," said "Dad," when interviewed by the "Record" on his arrival in Wellington for a personal appearance tour with the picture "Dad and Dave Come to Town." B ERT BAILEY, beloved "After all, these are characters in pictures and plays that are written primarily for entertainment. It seems to me the reason why Dad and Dave are so popular in Australia and New Zealand is because, beneath all the fun, there is the story of the pioneers who went on to land, and practically cut their farms out of the bush. They endured great hardships and they made good. The interest surrounding characters like that will never die in these countries. "If you take the absolute point of view that a film is an advertisement for a country, then they would have to cut out 75 per cent of the pictures of a comedy type made overseas,"
