Members, Make Sure YOU Vote

THE new New Zealand DX Club Advisory Board, which will take office on July 1, will consist of Messrs. C. A. Cox, L. W. Mathie, A. J. Maule and R. A. Roycroft. These were the members elected by the ballot which was conducted last month and, when a president hag been elected, they will be allotted H.Q. numbers. "Three of the four board members have served in this capacity beforethe new member being Mr. A. J. Maule, who takes the place of a retiring member, Mr. J. P. Cowlishaw. ‘While we are very pleased to see Mr. Maule being rewarded for his many years of service to the club, we are sorry to be losing the benefit of the experience of Mr. Cowlishaw, who has held office on the Advisory Board since its inception. His not being nominated was due to an oversight on the part of the Manawatu branch officials. We take this opportunity of wishing the new board the best of luck in the coming year, and thanking the retiring member for his unswerving loyalty and helpful advice during his terms of office. This year the voting showed a big increase, mainly due to the publishing of a voting coupon in several issues of the "Radio Record" and partly to the increased membership. Jarly in the voting, of course, it was "anyone’s fight," but as the closing date approached it became a contest between Cox and Mathie for most votes, Roycroft was well placed, and Hutchings and Maule fought out a duel for the vacant position on the board. Maule, however, rapidly widened his margin of votes and so he will hold office ou the Advisory Board for the first time. Our congratulations to Mr. Maule, and also to Mr. Hutchings, who, while not successful this time, polled a considerable number of votes, .considering that he is a comparatively new member and that his chief opponent (Mr. Maule) is probably very much better known to club members. Altogether, 524 votes were polled, 12 of which were from non-members, and 12 of which had more than one name

crossed out. The numbers of votes received by the nominees is given below :--

It now remains only to elect a president, and to this end a voting coupon appears on this page. All members are requested to complete it and forward it to the Secretary, New Zealand DX Club, P.O. Box 1680, Wellington, by Thursday, June 80. ‘A resume of the activities of the nominees appeared in several issues last month, and as space does not permit its republication, those who are not well acquainted with the activities of the nominees are referred to the issues of the "Radio Record" dated May 13, 20, 27, and June 3. Answers to Correspondents "CQDX" (Wellington): I received a reply from VES5BF on May 31, and the uddress is given as: E. R. MacIntyre, 1220 Seymour Street, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.-5d1A. (Frankton). Stations Identified "TJ NKNOWN " (Wellington) : The station you heard on 49.30 m. from 7.18 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6, may possibly have been COCO, Cuba. I heard this station on Tuesday, May 17, from 9.15 to 10 p.m. on 49.80 m, (approx.), and another Auckland dxer heard it from.7.30 to 8 p.m. a few days earlier.-651A (Auckland). DX Topics Reports to VK2DQ. MY latest reports ure out to EA9AH, OAX5C, LU4CZ and COGF, EAXAH may be heard on 21.11 metres (14.20 inc.) in English (war news) at 8.45 am. Address is P.O. Box 124, Tetuan, Spanish Morocco. I heard COGF on their special programme dedicated to members of the New Zealand DX Club on May 29. They aunounced after almost every item in English. They were ouly R+ QSA8. OAXSC stated that he wants reports. He closes at 4.6 p.m. with a short announcement in English. While listening to TI4NRH recently I heard him ask dxers to print their names and addresses in block letters. He hag re ceived a number of reports which he has been unable to answer because of not being able to read the bad writing.

Any listeners who report on reception of VIK2DQ, who, as I have said before in this paper, wants reports from New Zealand, should send their reports to Dudley Nourse, care P.O. Box 7c, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and not the QRA given in call books. He "went off the deep end" on May 25 and he did not ‘tell me hig new QRA, but if reports are addressed to the address I have just given he will get them. If you have reported him and his QSL is overdue -well, you know the reason! He states that he hasn’t had much tine for radio, as he has been busy looking at houses, furniture and the like-poor feliow! He will answer them (reports) as soon as he gets settled down again.-551A

OME time ago "Boomerang" mentioned the difficulty experienced in obtaining veries from KA’s, I seem to have landed one of the very few who do verify. One February 11 I reported KAIBH, and on May 12 L received a very nice card, on which is a map of the Philippine Islands. The address is given as ‘Mrs, Joseph Reich, P.O. Box 681, Manila," and the input as 400 watts. The verie itself says "Thanks very much for your reports of our siguals. Best 738 and DX. (Signed) Bert and Jove." As this is the only report I have sent to the Philippines, I consider myself lucky to have received a reply. -610A, (Hamilton East).

Questions and Answers [Ve just discovered the silliest fault imaginable in my 18-year-old receiver which has been giving trouble for six weeks, I fancy it will be a new one even to you, and as time goes on it may become even more prevalent in the community, I called it "Radia] Xema"! T’ve torn the set to bits about six times in an endavour to find out the cause of the eternal fading and retuning necessary to foliow the Australian programmes. My lead-in runs directly through the lead-in tube to the set and is not secured ou outside aud inside as is usually the case. I had just dismantled the lightning arrestor for the tenth time and was gazing at the lead-in, when it dawned on me that when repainting the house with the best quality of white

lead paint, the painter had painted the end of the lead-in tube, too-a perfect connection to the earth! A scrape of my pocket-knife solved the problem! " Do I deserve a prize for finding it out, or one for being a prize ass for not spotting it sooner?-"The Skooshook" (Ohura), [Yes, you certainly deserve some recognition-jve will think out somesuitable form of medal, perhaps! Seriously, this is a fairly frequent form of trouble, as also the spiders which will insist on building homes in and around lightning arrestors. Dust settles on the webs and in wet weather, especially near the sea, signals disappear. Teo many people pull a receiver to Pieces to find where signals have gone and never give a thought to the ar-restor.-Tech, Ed.] "H)XPANDER" (Christchurch) : First of all make sure that the hum is not coming in from the field of , the speaker itself. As you state this is a separate unit, it may be that there is

eall for an extra filter choke and condenser in this portion. Excite’ the speaker alone and see if there is hum -if so investigate and cure first. If the hum is coming in in the 6A3 stage, then connect a potentiometer across each filament as you suggest and the grid return of each valve should be returned to the potentiometer across that valve filament. Bypassing the arms of the potentiometers to clrassis may be uecessary. Another way is to use one potentiometer across the filament supply for the 6A8’s and earth the arm-this will enable a balance to be obtained and is usually suflicient. Decoupling always helps when the hum is more or less general, and the best places are in the plate of the detector and plate of the driver valve. As tlhe original unit gave no trouble from hum, it seems as though the higher filament voltages of the 6A3’s should be blamed. Have you earthed the centre tap of the 6.8 volt winding-it may not be exactly central and the potentiometer would then clear up the trouble? "GPARKS" (Kaipara): The carbon microphone requires a curreut passing through it fo operate, so that in the circuit you used with it it could not possibly work. Use a transformer and battery with the microphone and, connect the transformer secondary to the pick-up terminals and the operation will then be normal. R:C.A. Annual Report HE eighteenth annual report of the Radio Corporation of America, which was issued at the end of February, showed some interesting highlights of the year’s operations. Among them is the net profit for the year 1987 of 9,024,858 dollars, which is a 46.6 per cent. increase over the 5,155,936 dollars for 1936. An increase in network stations of the NBC from 102 to 148 during the year was reported, and the number of shortwave broadcasts to foreign countries in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, has increased from 184 to 3179 during the year under review. Among the technical achievements of the year enumerated in the report were: The development of mobile television units; the inauguration of facsimile transmissions by radio of news bulletins for home reception; the marketing of the automatic radio alarm, which ensured reception of SOS signals when the operator is off duty. Of the total of nearly 20,000 NBC programme hours, 70 per cent, came under the category of "sustaining" and 30 per cent. under ‘sponsored." The former is a service rendered at the expense of tha NBC, while the latter, of course, is paid for by advertisers, °
