DRAMA WEEK
AUSTRALIAN PLAYS ON AIR. (ZENERAL interest should be aroused by the forthcoming Second Australian Radio Drama Week, to be held by the ABC from May 8 to May 14. The festival will be opened at 80 pm, N.Z.T., on Sunday, May 8, by the Federal Controller of Productions, Mr. F. D. Clewlow. He will extend an invitation to listeners to form tuemselves into a Radio Drama Listening Panel, to comment regularly on plays broadcast from national stations. The first play will be given at 10.45 on the same Sunday night, this being "Samson," by Dal Stivens, Mr. Stivens is the author of "The Tramp" and Olher stories, but this will be his first broadcast radio play. We was born in New South Wales in 1911. Edmund Barclay is the second author to be represented. His episode 13 of "Into the Light" will be given on Monday, May 9, at 9.80 p.m. BarClay is the best knowa of Australian radio dramatists. He has written everything "from learued dissertations on Socratic philosuphy to Sexton Blake’s, the latter being by far the most exhausting." Lionel Shave will be represented by "A Sirius Cove." which will be bracketed with Walter Brooksbank’s ‘Boiled or Fried," both plays being given on Tuesday, May 10, at 10.80 p.m. Lionel Shave has written several radio plays. also "The Dumbles," 4 domestie sketch, Walter Brooksbank ‘vas born in South Australia, but now lives in Melbourne. He is a short story -yriter, mostly under the nom-de-plume of "Horton Brooks," and has ha several striking radio plays recently necepted by the ABC. J.D. Peters is the anthor of the mont ambitions play of the week, ‘Two Thousand Million Yenrs," whieh is down for Wednesday, May 11, at 10,30 p.m, Mr. Peters is 2 Melbourne journalist. short story writer, and playwright. The play for Thursday, May 12, at 9.380 p.m. is a revival of "The Jackeroo," written by the late Richard Barry, Mr Barry, a New South Wales writer of great promise, died shortly after finish ing this, his first rade play, Alexander Turner, of West Austra lia, is this year represented by "Conglomerate." Mr. Turner is at the moment a bank officer in g country district of West Australia and wag pre: viously for a short period a schoolmaster, Finally, Catherine Shepherd, author of "Daybreak" (Saturday, May 14, at 10.30 p.m.). Miss Shepherd is a Tas. manian resident, although she was born in Southern Rhodesia and educated in Britain. "Daybreak." a study of convict times in Tasmania, is hep first radio play.
