WHY AT 5.30?
DANCE MUSIC HELPS THE SKIPPER HY has station 3ZB, Christchurch, been playing band music at the horrible hour of 5.30 a.m. on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays? The secret leaked out last week when it was revealed that the idea was to enable the inter-island steamer express making for Lyttelton to retune its radio direction-finding apparatus to 3ZB’s wavelength. The station’s aerial at North New Brighton, with a powerful light on the top of the mast, provides an excellent beacon for shipping making for the Lyttelton Heads. To use one wellknown skipper’s words, "We can hit Lyttelton Heads every time, even in the densest fog,"-by taking a bearing on the 8ZB light. So now, as well as being a popular entertainment factor in the life of the community, the station has estab lished itself as a valuable link between shipping and the shore,
