CARDIGAN AND DRESS

Materials Required: 120z. 4-ply Nursery Viyella Knitting Yarn, Shade N.3 (Blue). Alternate Shades: N.4 (Pink) and N.1 (Yellow). 8 white pearl buttons; press studs. Viyella Pins: 1 pair each No. 11 and 13. American pins: 1 pair each No. 2 and 1. For export use only. Measurements.-Cardigan: Length from _ shoulder, 12% inches. Length of sleeve seam, 10 inches. Dress: Length, 18 inches. Width all round at underarm, 22% inches. Sleeve seam, 9% inches. Tension: 8 sts. to f inch. 10 rows to 1 inch. Abbreviations: K., knit; P. purl; sts., stitches; tog., together; st st., stocking stitch. CARDIGANS. With No. 13 pins, cast on 162 sts. Work in K. 1, P. 1 rib for 2 inches. K. K. 3, P. 3 to end of row. K. P.1* K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to last 5 sts., K. 3, P. 2. K. P. 2* K 3, P. 3 * repeat to last 4 sts., K. 3, P. 1. K P. 3, K. 3, repeat to end of row. Continue in this way throughout the cardigan, advancing 1 st. on every other row (the K. 3, P. 3 row) to make a diagonal rib. Work 4% inches from ribbing, ending on wrong side of work. Decrease 1 st. at each end of pin on the next and every 6th,,row. . On the 4th decrease, K. 2 tog., K. 33, cast off 4 sts., K. 78, cast off 4 sts., K. 33, K. 2 tog. Work on this front of cardigan first, placing the remaining sts. on spare pin. Continue in pattern, knitting 2 sts. tog. at armhole edge of the next K. row and still decrease on every 6th row at front of cardigan, until you have 28 sts. left. Work without shaping until the work measures 4 inches from armhole. Cast off 7 sts. at armhole end of the next 3 K. rows to shape for shoulder. Cast off. Join yarn to the other front at armhole edge on wrong side of work and work in exactly the same manner. Join yarn to back, wrong side of work facing you, work in pattern, knitting 2 sts. tog. at each end of the pin on the next 2 K. rows. Work without shaping for 4 inches from beginning of armhole. Cast off 7 sts. at the beginning of the next 6 rows. Cast off. Sleeves.-Cast on 54 sts. with No. 13 pins. K. 1, P. 1 rib for 2 inches. Change to No. 11 pins. Next row: K. K. 3, P. 3, repeat to end of row. K. P.1* K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to last 5 sts., K. 3, P. 2. Continue making the diagonal rib. Work 3 inches, increase 1 st. at each end of the next and every 6th row until there are 66 sts. Continue without shaping until the sleeve measures 9% inches. Take 2 tog. at each end of pin ‘until there are 26 sts. Cast off. Band.-Cast on 12 sts. with ' No. 13 pins. Work in rib of K. 1, P. 1’for 3 rows. Work buttonhole. K. 1, P. 1, K. 1, P.-1, cast: off 3 sts., Pp. i, K.1, P. 1, K. 1, P. 1. Next row: K. 1, P. 1, K. 1, P. 1, K. 1, cast on 3 sts., K. 1, P. 1, K. 1, P. 1. Make 2 more buttonholes 1§ inches apart. Continue until work measures about 28 inches. Cast off.

4 DRESS. Front.-Cast on 144 sts. on No. 11 pins. K. 5 rows. * K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to end. K. P.1* K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to last 2 sts., P. 2. K P 2+ K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to last st., P. 1. Continue with the diagonal rib until work measures 114 inches, ending on the wrong side of work. K. 2 tog., v t mes, then K. every 2nd and 3rd sts. tog. to last 18 sts., K. 2 tog., 9 times (90 sts. on pin). Change to No. 13 pins, K. 1, P. 1, rib for 7 rows. Change to No. 11 pins, K. 1 row, P. 1 row. Work in st. st. for 1% inches. Cast off 3 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows, then K. 2 tog. at the beginning and end of the next 3 rows (78 sts. on pin). Work in st. st. until the work measures 54 inches from top of ribbing at waist, ending with a P. row. K. 29, cast off 20 for neck, K. 29. P. 29, join on another ball of yarn and work the other side at the same time, P. 29. ’ K,. 27, K. 2 tog. K. 2 tog., K. 27. P. P. K. 26, K. 2 tog. K. 2 tog., K. 26 Work 3 more rows without shaping. Cast off or leave on spare pin for grafting. Back.-Work exactly the same as for front of dress to tne finish of seven rows of ribbing at waist. Left back: With No. 11 pins K. 47. K. 4, P. 43. Repeat these 2 rows for 1% inches,’ ending with a P. row. coy Cast off 3 sts. at the beginning of next row and take 2 tog. at armhole edge of the next 3.rows. Continue working in st. st. until work measures 6% inches from top of ribbing at waist erding with aK. row. : Cast off 12 sts. P. to end of row. K. to last 2 sts., K. 2 tog., P. 2 tog., P. to end of row. Cast off, or leave on pin for grafting. Now join yarn to centre back and cast on 4 sts. at the end of sts. on spare pin. K. P. 438, K. 4. Continue repeating these 2 rows and work to correspond with the left side at back. Sleeves.-Cast on 16 sts. with No. 11 pins. Work in st st., increasing 1 st. at each end of pin on every row until you have 64 sts., then decrease one st. at each end of pin on every 10th row until 54 sts remain. Work without shaping until the side seam measures 7% inches, ending with a K. row. K. 4 rows. x K, 3, P. 3 * repeat to end of row. K. Work 14 more rows of diagonal rib. K. 8 rows and cast off. Collar.-Cast on 48 sts. on No. 11 pins. K. 5 rows. . 8, * K. 3, P. 3 * repeat to last 3 sts., K. 3. "3, P. 1 * K. 8, P. 3 * repeat to last 8 sts., K. 3, P. 2, K. AAS RAR . 38, P. 2 * K.°3, P. 3 * repeat to last 7 sts., K. 3, P. 1. K. 3. Continue in the diagonal rib, keeping a K. 3 border at each end. Work 1% inches. Change to No. 13 pins. Work 4 more rows and cast off. Make another collar. To Make Up.-Damp and press well. Join up shoulder, side and sleeve.seams of cardigan. Sew in sleeves. Sew band all round. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Sew up,dress side seams and sleeve seams. Graft shoulders. Sew in sleeve. Place collars in position on dress, oversew on the right side neatly. Sew press studs down back of dress, then sew on 5 buttons down centre back.
