DX Topics Dia Any Other Dxer? FrRoM reports in "Radio Record’ of 14th inst. it would appear that all your DX correspondente heard the new shortwave ‘station "Radio Podebrady, Czechoslovakia," on the afternoon of Saturday, July 25, I would like to say. that. I logged thig station between 6:15 a.m, and 6,20 a.m, on Friday, July 24, on what was, I believe, his first test transmission, ~ , At approximately 6.25 a.m., N.Z.S.'L., he announced his station name in four different languages (including English), but as the station was surging badly I only caught the words "Radio , Czechoslovakia." At the time the station was working on 49.05 metres. I told a keen DX friend of mine that same evening (Friday), and my friend ¢auglht the station on Saturday, July 25, It.would be
interesting to know if any other dxer

The LRX-LRU Mix-up. {[z is reported that LRU is operating on 81.25 metres, whereas LRX is the correct call of this well-heard South Amertean, The call is announced regularly in Spanish as "Hay Airtay Eckiss Radio HD) Mundo Buenos Aires," and call is given in Bnglish when station eloses. It is then that the schedule of LRU, which operates ~ on 19.62 metres, is announced.-d. V. MeMinn (Wellington). Listeners’ Reports (By Publicity Department, N.Z.A.R.T.). LJSTENERS may often wonder why é they do not always receiye con~ firmation of their amateur reports and, possibly, a few remarks and suggestions’ on this matter may assist listeners in . compiling their future reports, One of the reasons why reports are not confirmed is that amateur stations who have been on the air for some years know ful] well exactly how their signals should be received and, therefore, have no need for listeners’ reporis. Another reason may be-given from the fact that amateur stations are not allowed to "broadeast" and must work similar stations only. If an amateur wants a report, therefore, he can obtain and receive it almost imimediately from the station he is Working. Then there is the matter of coset. Cards, envelopes and stamps cost money and many amateurs think, possibly with some justification, that they can use the money to better advantage within their own station, However, while the above ate contributory factors, the main reason is that practically every listener's report contains little or no useful information, Listeners, if they make their reports useful and show their co-operation by enclosing return postage, have every pos sibility of recéiving a confirmation in return, as amateurs, as a whole, are only too willing to assist those genuinely _interested in their transmissions.
Amateur reports cannot be dealt with like broadcast station reports. They are a different type of transmission, and, therefore, must receive different treatment. Broadly speaking, the usual type: of yeport. form printed for breadcast. station. reporting is useless from the amateur’s point of view, and, therefore, should not used unless much more information is added. As a ‘guide to, those desitoug of improving their amateur reports, the following points will be of interest as they form the basis of a good amateur reporh . (1) A correct reading of signal strength and readability as you receive it... not as you think it should be received. Giving QSA5, R9 where it should be QSA4, R6 only makes the amateur think you are praising him, hoping to get his card-and generally you miss. (2) An intelligent check on modulatien percentage. An intelligent precis of any faults you notice such as hum, background noise, clarity of speech, ete. Repeat any of the above when tests are being made concerning same. (5) Give a comprehensive, but brief, description of your receiver and antenna together with a word about your locality as regards reception generally. . Sufficient data to enable the etato yerify your logging-don’t give an essay. If listeners follow out the above with any useful additions they can think of their reports will be confirmed.
