HAIR ON END
We know that both in ourselves and in many of the lower animals the hair can, and does, stand on end with fright, almost "like the quills upon the firetful porcupine," _as Shakespeare says, It is also true, ashe says, that. it is possible for "‘each particular hair to stand on end," for we find that every hair has the power to do ‘this, and that what happens is not that.several hairs stand-up together as the result. of pulling on the skin. " ; At the root of the hair we find.a tiny muscle so arranged that, while the hair -usually lies slantwise, when this muscle is set working the hair stands upright. a The best reasons ‘we can give for this peculiarity are that this movement may help to keep the root of ‘the hair in order by a sort of massage, or ‘that it may. serve in keeping the skin clean. © :
