Zelanda's Success
(Special from
Sydney
ALTHOUGH New Zealand’s prima donna, Margherita Zelanda, has not been in the Australian news much lately, she is being kept busy. At the present time she is under contract to, the Australian Broadcasting Commission, starting a tour of the national stations at Sydney on May 6 last. After a week there she went on to Melbourne and sang over 83AR. From Melbourne she went to Adelaide, then Perth (where she is now), Hobart, Brisbane and return seasons in Sydney and Melbourne. The tour is expected to finish about the end of August. Zelanda has found a definite place in the hearts of the music-loving
people of the Commonwealth; apart from her broadcasting work she is much in demand for the concert platform. She’ is very ready, too, to lend her lovely voice to the cause of charity,- one of the most important charitable functions at which she has appeared lately being a concert for the Rachel Foster Homes for Women and Children. In one day Zelanda had the unusual distinction of appearing at two functions before Lady Gowrie, the wife of the Governor-General of Australia, and her Excellency expressed admiration for Zelanda’s singing. She asked to have the prima donna presented to her, and they chatted long together, Lady Gowrie being extremely musica! and having a fine singing voice. Madame Zelanda is looking forward to a return tour of New Zealand after she has finished her Australian engagements. She then intends to visit Burope with appearances before the microphones of the B.B.C.
