B.B.C. Empire Broadcasts Mentioned in Discussions — 4YA Mast Will Soon Be Seen Above the Hills — Visiting Instrumentalists | Quickly Popular in Trio Items
HE Presbytery of Dunedin had a short discussion on the subject of broadcasting church services at its last monthly meeting. The two chief questions that arose were as to whether the stations should continue broadcasting services from wired churches or should inaugurate a new method of broadcasting their own services from the studio at a time when the regular services were not being. conducted. Rvidently there was some suspicion that broadcasts of actual church services might be having an effect on attendances.
and the studio service was suggested as a means of overcomin~ the possible . position. It was pointed out by one member that the B.B.C. held its -own chapel services in addition to recording church proceedings for broadcasting purposes, but it should be added here. the B.B.C. does broadcast from wired churches, and only records for the Daventry short-wave station, which broadcasts at regular intervals to various parts of the Empire. The -Australian and New Zealand transmission, reception of which commeénces here about 4 p.m., usually includes a ‘church service on Sunday, this being previously recorded for the session. which is actually broadcast from England at 5 am. A recording then is obviously the only means of providing a service at that time of the morning for reception in this part of the world late in the afternoon. Y the time these lines reach: the eye of the general public the new 4YA mast will probably be reaching above the sky-line on the Otago peninsula. In the last week the weather has been much kinder to the workers at the Highcliff site, and they have thus been able to push along the work in quick time. As the: tower grows in height and is discernible from almost all parts of the city, it will more than likely be the first in(ication to many of the exact location of the new premises. As is the case in Auckland, the Dunedin. mast’s base sits on a small circle of porcelain insulators, which do not appear to he particularly strong, but which are really capable of withstanding a very much heavier load than that provided by the towering steel work. The Blectrie Light and Power Departmeni has been busy lately running lines to the site from two different directions to provide alternative supplies, while the Post and Telegraph Department has stretched its service lines to the ground, one of these being used as telephone line by the contractors. NTIL they gave an instrumental recital in the Town Hall Concert Chamber a few weeks ago, practically nobody in Dunedin had heard of Mis= Mary Bucklin, or Miss Adele Bucklin. or Mr, Fred’ Page, but their public appearance in the city soon made their names widely known, and. many regretted that they did not avail themselves of the opporunity of attending the. re- cital. However, these three accomplished artists will be back here this month to fulfil radio engagements, and ‘it is presumed that all those who failed ‘to put in an appearance at the recital will be listening-in this time. Mr. Page and Miss Mary Bucklin are to be heard on July 18 in "Sonata" -(Eeccles), a work for pianoforte and ‘eello, while the following night Miss Adele Bucklin will join the group when. Mozart’s "Trio in B Wat’ will be
heard. Miss Adele Bucklin and Mr. Page will: also collaborate in a performance of "Sonata, No. 2" (Delius), for violin: and pianoforte; On the 18th Mr. Vincent Aspey will contribute to ‘the entertainment, and a recorded talk by Mr. Stanley Baldwin on "The English Character" sounds intriguing. Mr. Walter Kingsley will be giving a return recital. next. week.
