HE following shortwave notes are from Mr. H. I. Johns (N.Z.171W), Wanganui :- MONDAY, MAY 6 WSXK, 25.25m., Programme of mixed choir singing. Signals very unsteady and conditions not good, Signals 25, QSA4 at 2.7 p.m. W2XAF, 31.48m. Musical programme, with signals very unsteady, only R38, QSAQ, at 2.15 p.m. DJD, 25.51m, Signals a little stronger on this station, R5, QSA4 at 2.18 p.m.. with a musical programme. HJ4ABA, 25.6m, Musical programme, but very weak. Signals R2, QSA2, at 2.29 p.m. ; DJC, 49.83m. Very fine mixed choir singing heard, accompanied by an orchestra, at 240 p.m. Signals R5, QSA4. GSL, 49.10m. With a musical programme to Canada. Signals R4, QSA3, at 2.59 p.m. WS8XK, 48.9m, Musical programme of dance numbers. Signals RG, QSA5, at 4.9 pan. , TUESDAY, MAY 7. GSB, 21.5 m., musical programme of choir singing, good -quality. Station very good this morning, R7, QSA5 at 7.45 a.m. GSD, 25.5 m.: Same programme as above. Station also good. Both Empire stations the best this morning on the 25 and 31m. bands. Signals R7, QSAS at 7.50 a.m. FYA, 25.2 m.: Talk in French, news session. Signals R6, QSA5 at 7.55 a.m. RNE, 25 m.: Putting over session 1 Signals R7, QSA5 at 7.58 a.m. 2R0, 20.7 m.: Usual programme of excellent music, operatic, etc. Signals RG, QSA4 at a.m. All stations on the 49m. band very weak at 819 a.m., and of no entertainment value at all. RNE, 25 m.: Opened up at 8.20 a.m. ‘with the "International," but conditions very bad this morning, making speech hard to hear. Signals RG, QSA38. DJA, 31.38 m.: Talk in German, but unsteady. Signals at 11.385 am. R4, QSAS8. EAQ, 36.6 m: Very weak, like all stations on the 31m. band, very unsteady. Signals R38, QSA2 at 11. ‘41 p.m. FYA, 25.60: Talk in French, steady and clear, signal R7, QSA5 at 11.50 a.m. Opened up at 2.15 p.m., R8, QSA5. DID, 25.5m: With.a musical programme, but weak, signals R4, QSA8 at 1.30 pm. At 2.40 p.m., R6, QSA5 with a musical programme. WSXK, 25.25m: Putting over a short play. Signals clear and at 1.33 p.m. were R5, QSA4. ‘
GSO, 31.32m: To Canada. Commenta«tor giving description of ‘the. King and Queen on their way to St. Paul’s for the thanksgiving service. Signals R5, QSA4, :2.80 p.m. At 3 p.m., while gervice was on signals were at fair speaker strength. GSB, 31.5m: News session being given out. Signaly very clear, R7, QSA5 at 6.80 p.m. ; 8LR, 31.5m: Putting on national programme from 8LO. Signals inclined to fade slightly, otherwise good; R7, QSA5 -at 10.21 p.m. W1XK, 31.35m: Putting over proeramme of music on early morning session. The weather forecast ag read out was for rain and more rain. Temperature outside the studio was 40 degrees. Signals R4, QSA4 at 10.31 p.m. RV15, 70.4m: Programme of orchestral music. Wonderful volume, at full speaker strength at 11 p.m. WEDNESDAY, MAY 8. 2R0, 30.6m: Lady announcer heard speaking. Station very good this. morning and conditions much improved. Signals R6, QSA5 at 8.49 a.m. At 9.22 am.: A German station was heard -testing with an N.B. Coy. station in America. Tater a programme was put over and rebroadeast in America, No call sign was given from Germany. Signals R4. QSA4 at 9.40 a.m. EAQ, 30.6m: Heard, but very weak, with talk in Spanish. Signals R38, QSA3 at 10.15 a.m.’ THURSDAY, MAY 9. Wonderful reception was obtained on the morning of above date, stations coming in with good volume throughout the morning on the 25m. and 31m. bands. 2RO0, 30.6m. Programme of orchestral music. Very good signals this morning. R7, QSA5, at 8.50 a.m. GSB, 31.5m. Programme of orchestral music. Signals coming over very well. The best station this morning; R7, QSA5, at 9 a.m. At 9.50 a.m. station holding same volume. FYA, 25.5m. Talk being .given in French. Signals R5, QSA4, at.9.16 a.m. DJA, 31.38m. Programme of piano compositions at good volume and very clear. R7, QSA5, at 10 a.m. EAQ, 30.4m. Just opening up with announcements in English and then a musical programme. Signals R5, QSA4, at 10.5 a.m. 2R0, 30.6m. Heard at 1145 a.m., when announcer was heard to give eallsign, I2RO, then. news in English was given. Signals R4, QSA4. ~~ WSXK, 25.25m. Heard at 11.55 a.m. Musical programme. Signals R4, QSA8. Wi1XK, 31.35m. With a musical programme. Signals R4, QSA4, at 12.2 p.m. W2XAF, 31:48m. Musical programme of organ selections. R7, QSA4, at 2.55 p.m. CJRX, 25.6m., Canada, Coming in right alongside FYA, but not very strong, with a musical programme. Signals R3, QSA2, 3.15 p.m.
