DX CLUB News and Views Identification Wanted Station on approx. 1215 k.ec. heard on Sunday, May. 5. At 249 am, . "Love Was Born," was heard, and at 3.19 a.m. an organ solo was played.. At 3.21 a.m. a man announced and gave the call which

sounded like 3BK, Melbourne-

Wobbles

(Marton).

Stations Identified 186W (Wellington): What you took to be a VE on 1290 k.c. is XQHC, Shanghai. He always calls in English, and the call would sound like 2JH, Your other station, on 700 k.c., was XMHC, Shanghai. Both these’ stations have English announcers and -broadcast [nglish dance music, 122MC (Christehureb) ; Your: American on 1470 k.c. is KGA928 (Invercargill),

DX Topics Some Facts About MTCY. I REOLNTLY received the following letter from station MTCY :- *We have received your letter and are much pleased by the fact that you heard our transmissions. "We find that the broadcast items and times which are indicated in your report, do correctly correspond with our programme of the date. So we have the pleasure to acknowledge your reception of our station. . "At present we broadcast the rise-up | exercise, linguistic lessons, market prices, news, -weather-note, -lectures, programme for children, public announcements, an:! musie either in the Japanese and Manchu languages through the one kilowatt transmitter everyday in the daytime hours from 6.80 a.m. to 5.80 p.m,; and in the evening hours from 6 p.m. to 10.80 p.n... and. the lectures, music, drama. story, the reading of the poems, public announcements and: news in Manchu, Japanese and Russian through the 100 k.w. transmitter. "Our station had been under the management of the Kwantung Garrison ap to September 1, 1933, when the manage- . ment was transferred to the Manchuria ’ Telegraph and Telephone Company, and our 100 k.w. transmission has started on : the first last November, and are now on _ the air every evening. ‘In anticipating to receive another . report from. you, we are. yours respect fully, MTCY, Hsinking Radio Station, . S. Kimura, the Manager."-216W (Pal- _ merston North), This Interference Problem. . At the last meeting of the Wellington branch, it was proposed and second- , ed by members that we challenge the following paragraph which Appeared on page 16 of last week’s issue: "As long as the nearest national station of good field strength is received without interference; jt: is considered by the department that the listener is served . with a trouble-free broadcasting service.’

That is the fundamental standard-and one which must in all reason be accepted at present. This stahdard means that the department is aware of the meaning of "essential" service to the average listener. Those who purchase sets which which are eapable of long-distance reception must expect interference when they do switch on to long-distance. Nature sees to that in many instances, so who can blame the trams, electric motors and so on if they provide a little extra trouble?" . We take it for granted that most listeners can hear a national station at fuirly good volume during the scheduled hours. If they can't, well. interference is not going to make any difference to the station if it is not up to entertainment yolume, Then we have owners of shortwave sets only. New Zealand has no national shortwave station, but we must have & license. to operate .this receiver. On. shortwave we have plenty of electrical in‘terference and must therefore be entitled to some consideration Tf not, then there ~ is no need for the interference branch of the radio inspectors. In other towns-and cities much interference is being remedied with some suc- cess. In one town the radio inspector calls every month on set owners and asks if there are any complaints. Tf so, they are given his services and the source of interference js located and in. most cases remedied. . : It would be interesting to know. how the other branches regard this matter.-
