Christchurch’ DX Club Meets Wellington Engineer To Discuss Elimination of Interference-Brilliant Young Pianist Delights Listeners in Children’s Hour-2ZR Club Meets.
MIE executive members of the New Zealand DX Radio Association held a conference in Christchurch with Mr, I. H, R. Green, radio engineer on the staff of the chief engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, It was stated by Mr. J, C. Stapleton, president of the association. that many interesting points were discussed, and it was agreed that the.association should co-operate with the ‘ department in eliminating radio interference. Al] complaints are being investigated very carefully, and Mr Green assured members of the association that, with the co-operation of all parties concerned, the "radio-roarer," Which is the chief offender in Christchurch, will be overcome. Miss JANETTA McSTAY, who spent A ° . a few days in last week on her way to England in acceptance of the English Scholarship which she has gained at the age of seyenteen, delighted inspiring musicians last Monday evening during the children’s hour from 8YA, Miss MecStay played "Juba," a negro dance, and "The Little White Donkey." SYA authorities regretted that this brilliant musician could not be heard during the evening. T the annual meeting of the 2Zh Radio Club, Nelson, the following
omecers were elected :--Latron, Myr, H, Atmore, M:P.; secretary, Mr. I. Maclay; treasurer, Mr. D. Moore; committee, Messrs. J, I. Moore, ©. Pickwell, T. Cole, and J. Stephenson. Mr, Atmore, in thanking members for his reelection, said that the station had been kept on the ait by a gift of £100 from the Goyernment. This was not to be taken as a precedent, but he thought that, in conjunction with Mr. i. J. Holyoake, memher for Motueka, he could persuade the Cabinet to grant a subsidy. A motion was passed requesting Mr. Atmore to interview the Minister for the club’s application for a subsidy, . TPHERE Will be a special _. (SONDITIONS in Christchurch were good for the reception of the elec-trically-recorded Jubilee addresses broadcast from the Empire Shortwave station at Dayentry, and rebroadcast by the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, The greater part-of the King’s speech at Westminster Hall was heard by radio listeners, and the Wednesday evening broadcast of the thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Cathedral which was attended by the King and Queen was a memorable one. PHue twenty-fifth annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions began in Christchurch last Saturday, and a total of 1956 entries were received. The judges are Mr, Will Hutchens, Mus.Bae (Wanganui) (voeal and instrumental); Mr. R. T. Bush (Greymouth) (elocution); and Mrs. R. Triges (Timaru) (fancy and national dancing). The official accompanist is Miss A. Harley Slack. Arrangements have been made by 3YA to:broadeast one ‘of the three demonstration concerts from .the Civic "‘Theatye at the end of the month. Committee during the first term of 1935 Miss D. Baster and Miss Jean Hay taking the infants and juniors in rhythm, movement and musical appreciation. Little pupils asSembled in the studio, and the listening classes were put through the same movements, the committee being kept in touch by reachers’ weekly reports of the lessons and the children’s reactions. Professor James Shelley and Mr. J. A. Masterton. D.A., talked to the upper standards on "Adventures in Art," this section finishing on April 17, when the "Advyentures in Exploration (Old and New)" were begun. Mr, G. Jobberns, M.A.. B.Sc. and Mr. L. FP. de Berry M.A. are -- taking these subjects, and the first two. talks in the new term will concern David Livingstone and Sir Alan Cobham, HE Timaru Radio Club held a meeting last week, which was presided over by Mr. ©. Barker, A letter was received from the general manager of the ‘Broadcasting Bodrd (Mr, B. C. Hands), stating the elub’s request fpr relays from Timaru would be browsht before the next meeting of the boar, Mr. J. L, Passmore, listeners’ representative (Dunedin), also wrote stating that he would raise the matter this month. The District Telegraph Engineer (Timaru), wrote stating that a
specially-constructed high frequency filter had been tested on electro-medical apparatus in Timaru, with a view to eliminating interference, and it had been found that, at a flistance of 200 yards, up to eighty per cent. of interference had been eliminated. Pur question of the department undertaking the construction of two similar filters for selling to the owners of apparatus had been referred to the chief engineer at Wellington, Mr, H. Gray, ° reported on behalf of the Tiniaru Hospital Committee that No. 6 ward was being permanently rewired, and that on completion, the only remaining ward, No. 5, would be given attention, It was announced that an offer had been made by Mr. ©. G. Baker to assist in. organising a community sing and concert in aid of the hospital fund, and that the services of Mr, Alan Brown (leader), and Mr, Bert, Goodland (pianist), of Christ church, were available for th purpose.
