Grand Jubilee Concert Next Month

Champion Cornetist and Walter Kingsley to Take Part — First Performance of "With Honour Crowned’-Humorous and Dramatic Play of the Sea.

SYMPHONIC Orchestral Society concert which by all accounts promises to be the most memorable and outstanding of the year will be held in the Wellington Town Hall.on Thursday evening, May 9. As this is Jubilee Week, patriotic numbers by well-.

known Hnglish composers will be featured, and the programme includes such popular songs as "There is a Land," "Britain Ask of Thyself," and

"Yeomen of England." The three men- . tioned items will be sung by that -exceedingly capable and popular baritone, Walter Kingsley. Mr. Kingsley, who needs very little introduction to New Zealand audiences, is an Wnglish baritone, and the mere fact that he had the honour to be chosen for the role of "Hlijah" in the performance under the famous conductor Sir Hamilton Harty at the Sydney Town Hall amply testifies to his ability. John Robertson, who is certainly the foremost cornetist in New Zealand to-day, will also appear at the concert, when he will play "The Lost Chord," "Take a Pair of Sparkling Byes," and "Showers of Gold." The latter of the three numbers is extremely difficult and could only be attempted by an absolute master of the instrument. Mr. Robertson is one of the few New Zealanders who has had the great privilege of broadeasting for the B.B.C. in England. When giving his first performance "over the air" in London Mr. Robertson wus

heard by Jack Payne, the famous conductor of an equally famous band. Mr. Payne was so impressed that he immediately secured the services of Mr. Robertson for his orchestra. Mr. Robertson has lately returned to New Zealand owing to illness in his family. A feature of the programme will be a grand march entitled "With Honour Crown," which will be played by the Symphony Orchestra. This march has been specially composed in honour of the King’s jubilee by the eminent English composer-conductor Albert Ketelbey, and as the march has just been written in all probability it will be the first time that it has been played publicly in the Empire. "With Honour Crown" has been sent to the New Zealand Broadcasting Board as an appreciation from Bosworth’s Publishing House in London. With such talented artists performing, this concert could scarcely fail to be the star effort of the year. (Continued on page 49.)

Wellington Notes

(Continued from page 19.) ON Wednesday evening a radio play entitled "The Flying Horse Clipper’ was presented from 2YA by F. M. Renner and Company. The play, which incidentally was written by Mr. Renner, told of the annual race between the tea‘ clippers from China to England, and was. most interesting. The plot was quite humorous and the sound effects very effective. To have written such a play as this Mr. Renner must have a very sound.knowledge of ships and the sea. The narration was generally excellent and perfectly clear, but occasionally the dramatic points were lost in too prolonged efforts av tense word-pictures. We hope this will not be the last of Mr. Renner’s plays. ASTER Saturday will find Lionello Cecil on the air from 2YA, when» he will sing a new song, "I Wonder," the words and music of which have been written by Claude Haydon. Mr. Haydon, who is an Australian by birth, is at present living in Lower Hutt, and ig very keen for Lionello Cecil to be the first to broadcast his song, as he is also an Australian. It will be remembered that Mr. Haydon first made a

name for himself as the composer of the grand opera, "Paolo and Franeesea," Which was performed at the Playhouse in Melbourne and later in New Zealand. . N Thursday, April 11, the swearingin ceremony of Viscount Galway will be broadcast from Parliament Buildings at 245 p.m. At 8 p.m. the civic reception for their Excellencies will be relayed from the Town Hall. The choral, orchestral and dramatic programme which was to have been broadcast from 2YA this evening, featuring the 2YA Concert Orchestra, the Hutt Valley Liedertafel, Mrs. .Wilfred Andrews and the Garrick Players, will be transferred to 2¥C.
