'One Night of Love' Heralds Big Films from Columbia in 1935
List of Stars Reads Like a Hollywood "Who's Who"
To-day the talking picture industry, like industries the world over, has set its house in order and is embarked on-a saner and sounder policy than films have known since the days when Pearl White and Mabel Normand first flickered across a crazy stretch of calico. Every’ film company has set itself the task of turning out good pictures for producers have come to realise that mediocre pictures represent just so much money thrown in the gutter, and Columbia Pictures Corporation, in announcing its schedule for 1935. has shown that it will be’ marching in the front ranks this year. This
company opened 1935 with the premiere screening in New Zealand of "One Night of Love," starring Grace Moore, and this superb film bids fair to break many records.
In 1934 such pictures as "It Happened One Night," starring Clark Gable und Claudette Colbert; "Lady for a Day," starring May Robson, Warren William, Guy Kibbee, Glenda Farrell, Ned Sparks; "Whom the Gods Destroy," starring Walter Connolly, Robert Young, Doris Kenyon, and "Lady by Choice," starring. May Robson, Carole Lombard, Walter Connolly, Roger Pyror, definitely proved to be outstandingly popular entertainments, and were amongst the most successful pictures of the year. In 1935, however, the remarkable progress of Columbia is more evident than ever before. The first. picture delivered from this studio
in the current year was the Grace Moore triumph, "One Night of Love.’ In this production, Columbia have set a new standard’ of musical entertainment. "One Night. of Love" is probably the greatest musical picture since sound came to-the screen and it has been an instantaneous success in every country of the world. The international acclaim given to this production merely indicates how accurately the men responsible for the production of Columbia Pictures have gauged the requirements of
public taste. America, England, the Continent, Australia and New Zealand have all re-acted sensationally to "One Night of Love." The picture is now in its fourth week in Auckland an4 will start the fifth week on Friday next. In Dunedin "One Night of Love’ is in the second week and every theatre record has been shattered both for attendance and receipts. Such seasons. are undoubted evidence of the unani-
mous popularity of the subject. The second of Columbia's big productions for 1935 is "Strictly Confidential," starring Warner. Baxter, Myrn® Loy, Helen Vinsen, Walter Connolly and Clarence Muse. Directed bv? Frank Capra from a story by Robert Riskin, this picture in England and America is proving every bit as suc cessful. as -"One Night -of Love." Arthur, Wailace Ford, Arthur Byron, Donald Meek, James Donlan and Arthur Hohl is definitely the greatest picture in which Mr. Robinson has, as yet, appeared. Following the remarkable performance given by Tullio Carminati in "One Night of Love’ Columbia have rewarded him with a starring contract. "Tet’s Live To-night" is:the title of his first picture, and he wiil share the success with Lilian Harvey. The cast also includes Janet Beecher, Hugh William, Tala Birell, Luis Alberni and Gilbert Emery. Two other musical pictures
Wlil be produced, The first is. "The Girl Friend" from the musical comedy of the same name. This production will star Jack Haley, Nancy Carrol] and Lupe Velez, together with a ~ ballet of 48 peautiful girls. The second ,is "Georgiana,’ starring James Dunn and Ann Sothern. | "Carnival" is another Robert Riskin story which is being brought to the screen by Walter Lang. The cast includes Sally Bilers, Lee Tracey, Florence Rice and Jimmy Durante, and the happy, cheerful story is bound to° prove popular with pic-ture-lovers the world over. Other

Claudette Colbert. and Carole. Lombard will also be’ starred by Columbia in 1935.
