Club Notes ~ From the Secretary’s Pen.

(By

A. B.

McDonagh

See, N.Z. S.W.C.,

4 Queen St., Wellington). Me: Cc. R. CLARKE, owner of amateur station ZL2ZAW, and the licensed station operator of ZL2QZ, . the Club’s station, is now engaged in overhauling the transmitter. This will, at first, be on the air as a CW station, but all equipment will be in readiness for telephony. As the station is for experiment and research, prelimin-., ary tests wili be confined ‘to several selected transmitting members. A number of donations have been received from members toward the cost of the equapment. OR some time past a commercial allwave receiver has been loaned to the club by a member, Mr. M. H. Wall, for the purpose of conducting special reception tests. The results of these have been sent overseas.

[XFORMATION. of VK2MR’s advance broadcasts, as published in former notes, was sent to all parts of the world, snd has also been repeated during WS8XK’s DX session, so that many thousands of lisieners would be able to report on this broadeast. LJSTENERS to RNE on Sunday, December 2, from 11 p.m. to midnighi on 25 metres, were treated to a talk on "A Trip Around the Volga,’ which opened and closed with the "Song of the Volga Boatmen." ‘The Russian Funeral March was played in memory of M. Kirov. At the same time Germany was coming in quite good on the Australian and New Zealand session. A NUMBER of very bad power leaks are in evidence in Wellington at present, and are spoiling reception of the Hmpire staion. I understand there is a movement afoot to convene a public meeting to see if anything can be done. N reply to a large number of listeners re the church service near VK2MB£, Sydney, on Sunday nights, I think it will be found that this is a relay of the longwave station at Oslo, Norway. VK3LR may shortly be on several wavelengths. N answer to the request of listeners several stations are sending information which will be given out as soon as time permits. At present Christmas overtime allows very little time for Club matters. (L.L members who are visiting Wellington at Christmas please note that I am on the telephone, and make a note of the number-53-316. My address will be found by following the Hatzitui (No. 2) tram lines from Courtenay Place and turning to the left in Brougham Street. ‘SUVA RADIO HEARD, HEARD the above station on approximately 22.94 metres (13,000 k.c.), from 12.20 am: to 1 a.m. on Friday morning, November 30, at R7, QSA6. playing records. They closed at 1 a.m. with the National Anthem..

They announced that they were on the air until 1 a.m, Suva time (exactly the same as N.Z.S.T.) on either Monday aud Friday, or Monday to Friday, I couldn't quite make out which. ‘There was a’ fairly heavy noise level and a "fluttering" surge--DX201W. (Wellington). HD following notes on shortwave reception are from Mr. H. I. Johns ‘N.Z.171W.), of Wanganui :- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, Daventry Station. The wedding of the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina was again put on from §.15 to 9.15 p.m., and was even better than on Thursday night from GSB, 31.5m., signals being at wonderful volume, very clear and steady. The wed ding, of course, was recorded on the blattnerphone. It was wonderful reception and I think one of the best nights for reception from the Daventry station SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1. 19 and 31-Metre Band. DJB, 19.73m., was much clearer than GSF, 19.8m: DJA, 31.38m., was very ‘weak’ at 9 p.m., while GSB, 81.5m., was fairly strong: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2. The American stations, WSXK, WSXAL and W8XAL, all at good strength when closing down, with clea" signals. WS8XAL ‘closed at 8 p.m. approximately with organ music, FYA, France, came in at good loudspeaker strength at 5.30 p.m. WS8XK, 25m., with good loudspeaker strength. The writer has not known this station to come in with such good volume before. GSB was at good volume, with organ solos.at 8.15 p.m. GSD not so good, only very weak speaker strength. At 9-10 p.m. relay from Manchester Cathedral was put over and came through well. DJA, .31.38m,,. at 9 p.m., was very weak, DJB, 19.73m., was better, but not strong. © For the first two nights signals from above stations haye been disappointing, that is for the first halfhour. At 9.380 p.m. DJB had improved
