A 180-line television receiver giving quality and detail said to be equal +o that of the home cinema hag been demonstrated in Germany. Ultra short waves. are used and the German Ministry of Propaganda has expressed its surprise at the improvements achieved. It is generally assumed that some twenty towns in the state will soon be equipped with ultra-short-wave television transmitters and as the new receiver can be made complete with a synchronising sound unit for less than £20 it is expected television will thus receive a marked stimulus, a e N view of the present adverse economic conditions prevailing in the United States, the American theatre industry has put forward a suggestion to the authorities in. which a request is made that radio receivers should be taxed to the same extent as the increased rate collected from houses of amusement for philanthropic purposes. Managers. contend that it would be fair to enforce an amusement tax on broadeast entertainments in view of the present plight of stage and variety artists. z BECAUSE the German manufacturers have made heavy sacrifices to produce the new, cheap "standard" sets, the Government has decreed that from September 1 no_ loudspeakers may be sold separately ; and anyone who wants just the bare loudspeaker in Germany must buy one of the cheap sets and take it to pieces. 2 * T the Royal’ Air Force centre at Cranwell, England, they have equipped a troop-carrier with transmitters and receivers, so that each pupil has a self-contained installation, with its own aerial, and ‘may receive jnstruction under service conditions.
