Answers to Correspondents 1i57W. (Wellington) : Acknowledgment of reception must definitely be stated on the card. Stations Identified D.D. (Bay of Plenty): Your stations are XER (735 k.c.), and KOA (830 k.c.). -"Pigin" (Wanganui). 122M.C.: Station heard September 17, on 750 k.c., playing "Love Me To-night," and Bastern music, was HS7PJ, Sala Daeng, Siam, *186W.: Station is HSPI, Bangkok, Siam, on 850 k.c., not F31iCD. DX Topics. Exiracts from Verifications. l FIAVE been receiving verifications for the past six months, and so far have no stations on my non-reply list. The following are included in the latest: KNX, card and Ekko stamp; they stated that their station is on a nationally cleared channel of 1050 k.c.; XEPN, card and three photos; the writing is in Spanish and English, and reads: "Received your report on our broadcast, and we hope you will continue hearing us. Reception verifield." JOHK, a letter-card; KHJ, a eard and WHO-WOC, a letter. I received ZIKY’s eard in six weeks, and KZRM’s card in two months. The address on KZRM’s card was Waniku instead of Waiuku, put fortunately I had put in "near Auckland" on my report, so that in case a mistake was made, the postal authorities would have some idea where I lived, and throuch this I received the verification

safely.

European Reception Patchy. JLUROPEAN reception has been patchy lately, Breslau (923 k.c.), Heilsberg (1085 k.c.), Leipzig (770 k.e.), Prague (614°k.e.), and Moscow (707 k.c.), being the only ones heard at any volume. The carrier of Vienna (580 k.c.) was at good stréngth, though musie, ete., was weak. American stations are at weak volume in the evenings, though several come in well-on their morning sessions, the best being KMOX, KRLD, KFBI, and KMMJ. XBR is heard at good volume after 2YA has- closed down, Latest verifications are: 4MB, Maryborough (50 w.), JOPK, JOFK (both very good. cards), JORK (photo of transmitter), XHFO

Experimenting with Aerials, PURING the last week or so I have been experimenting with yarious’ types of aerials, and the one I am at present using is giving excellent resuits. Similar to a Beverage, it is a 900Et, length of unbroken No. 12 galvanised. wire, run from a hill 150ft. high to my old aerial pole, which is 10ft, from the house, and 40ft. high. Another pole on a’ smaller hill, just below the big one, relieyes the weight of the wire. I used figh-paste jars for insulators, and strained the wire with a fencing strainer. Without hesitation, I recommend this type of aerial to country listeners who are anxious to improve their dx reception. . I am now able to receive 1YA at midday, while 2FO and 2BL can be heard every morning at Ré. The reception (Continued on page 26.)

HE following, which was written on a verification card received from WOGNK, may be of interest to dxers, ‘n view of the fact that it is supposed to have the poorest site in the world for radio transmission. "TNX for nice card, and quite a surprise. Hope to QSO U, soon, and hope you get license. Thanks again, and 73. My station, located in bottom of a canyon, 1000ft. deep-7O0ft. wide-trees all around-exceptionally © poor location, so very surprised to receive your ecard, and immensely pleased! Thanks yery much, and I shall look forward to a QSO-am an electrical engineer. stationed at a, hydro-electric: generating station here-78 es luck, ‘Lee.’" The name Le Roy Haley was on -the front. This station was heard on the -3500k.c. band, on March 15 last, calling W9DNP, and his signals were QSA8, R8. Considering the poor location of his station I think this is just another case of freak

reception.-
