Answers to Correspondents N. Jenkins (Masterton) : Many thanks re K¥GI, but which call is correct? Some eall-books give KGFI with the same ad-

(Wanganui).

ooo Identification Wanted American station on 780 k.c., heard Monday, October 2, on dance musiz, They closed down at 7.30 p.m., N.ZP., but unfortunately I misged the call sign. Part of their closing announcement was: "Operating on assigned frequency of 780 k.e., by authority of the Federal Radio Commision. return to the air at 6 am. -- Good-night." They went off

the air at 7.81 pm, N.Z.T-

American station on approximately 750 k.c., which is frequently heard giving talks on " ‘Koran,’ a great foreteller." These talks are followed by an announcer who speaks in fast but intelligible Ameriean, Also a station on 850 k.c., giving

the call KOA-

Stations Identified 158M.C. (Timaru): Buropean station on 985 kc. is Bordeaux Lafayette; the one on 941 k.c. is more likely to be Naples than Dresden, as Naples has been very

good lately.-

DX Topics European. Reception Good. RECEPTION has been very good lately, very little static being present. Europeans are especially good, Moscow, on 707 k.c., being the best, though Vienna, Prague, Rome, Bucharest, Breslau, Milan and Heilsberg also come in well. On Sunday, October 1, I counted no less than 52-stationé, including 18 of which 1 heard:only the carriers, American, Australian and Eastern ‘stations are also good, the -last-mentioned being heard early in the evenings, Latest verifications are: Brno (making 23 Buropeans), KDB, CFON, and one from WOC for re-

ception at 1 p.m-

Digger

(Hamilton).

Reception Poor. (ONDITIONS for reception during the last fortnight have-been poor, owing to excessive’ QR} , and I have done yery

little dxing. On the night of October 4, however, conditions were slightly better, and several stations were logged. ‘The American on 1500 k.c. was at R83, but faded out for over a minute during the --

announcements. ‘Love is the Sweétest Thing" was played just hefore closing at 6.22 pm. VK2WR. (235 m.) and VK4HR. (210 m.) have been very good, Latest verifications:are: KOH, on the air from 8 am, P.S.T.;) WHO-WOC (seventh verification); KYA and CFON. whose address is "Radio 'CFON, "The Voice of the Prairies Limited,’ Calgary,

Alberta, Canada,"-

2FW Wants Reports. GEVERAL dxers interested in VK hunting make the mistake of reporting to 2SW, and are receiving no reply, as this station is not on the broadeast band. The station in question is VK2FW on 1220 k.c., whose address is 212 Cowper Street, Waverly, N.S.W. Mr. Martin, the owner-operator, has asked me to inform members of the DX Club of the above facts, and also that he will be pleased to receive reports, providing postage is included, He usually signs off at 2° a.m.,

Sunday morning, N.Z.8.T.-

KDKA Verified for Midday Reception. S many dxers consider ‘midday reception of KDKA impossible, the letter published below, which is a verification received from KDKA on October 2, for midday reception, will be of interest.

Bulova

Timaru)

"We are very glad to have your letter of July 22, and . especially pleased to verify your reception of our station on 980 kilocyeles at 12,30 p.m., New Zealand time, on that date, which was our programme at 8 p.m., LHastern daylightsaving time, on July 21. "Your report very definitely indicates the programme which was’ given by Phil Harris and his orchestra. We can see no reason why anyone should doubt your report of this programme, as you have not only indicated some of the numbers played by Phil Harris, but also the name of the singer who was his soloist on that programme, (Continued on Page 26).

Dx Topics.

(Continued from Page 23). "We are glad to send you this verification, and trust that there may be many other New Zealand listeners added to our audience in the future. "We regret very much that it: was impossible for us to call you Saturday, August 26, as your letter arrived during my vacation, and such an arrangement was not possible. "We shall be very glad to hear from you again when you have heard something particularly interesting from station KDKA.-Very truly yours, G, Dare Fleck, Traffic Manager, KDKA." 2XN’s Kookaburra, Call. RECEPTION in this locality has been very patchy, the Japanese.sometimes being R2, while the higher powered Americans have been R6, and Australian stations R7 and R8&. KPO, WBBM, and KGO have been operating up till 8.30 p.m. My latest loggings are: 3MA (50 w., 900 k.c.), VKS5WB (1420 k.c.), and 2XN (50 w.), Lismore, who closes down with the kookaburra call. 4ZP, Invercargill, is on my non-reply list. I sent a report on May 80, enclosing a penny stamp,

another on July 12,;-and still another on August 238, enclosing three penny stamps, and as.yet have received no reply. My latest verifications are: CFCN, JOGK, 3KZ, JOPK, 4RO, _8BA, and WH0O-

( Wellington).

6ML Also Operates 61X. APANESE stations are now being heard at 7.45 p.m., JOHK. being the. best. ‘This station commences with its call sign, which it announces twice. 1ZS hag now increased its power, and would appreciate reports; KMTR (500 w., 57 k.e.) is on the air till 8.30 p.m. (9 p.m. summer.time), at R56, and 2EFC, is heard here at it best at 9.80 a.m. and 1.380 p.m. European _ stations are still good, and several may | be heard at 8 am., though static rather spoils reception. In a recent let--ter 6ML stated ‘that they operated a station under the call sign 61X,.and in--quired if it had been heard in New Zea-

land.

Pegoska

Bay of Plenty).

XOPP Verified. ECEPTION of American stations is poor at present, but it is improving slowly. Japanese and Chinese stations are coming in at good strength, though static interferes badly in the evenings. A report sent to XEAI, Mexico City,. has been returned through the D.L.O., as no station with that call could be found. An interesting report came from ~XOPP, Peiping, last week, stating that they transmit daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and ‘from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m., on 952 k.c., with a power of 100 watts. XQHD, Shanghai (1460 k.c.), remarked that my report was the most distant ever received, while XOPP, who until recently used the callsign COPK, has apparently mot previously been heard in New Zealand.-

Omsk

(Whakatane).

American Verifications. ONDITIONS for dxing have been poor lately, and consequently few new stations have been logged. One or two new WVK’s have been heard, though: static practically drowns them out. Americans have been at poor strength, with the exception of one Sunday night, while Huropeans are also poor. Latest verifications are: Brno, CFCN, WHAM, 2GR, 5IV, 2DX, and 8BY, though the majority of these are second verifications, The owner of 51V wishes me to inform dxers that have not received replies from him that he ig very busy at present and does not wish to be thought a stamp collector, but that he will answer all reports as soon as possible. I was extremely pleased to receive the verification from WHAM, «as this gives me an American verification on all frequencies of the broadcast’ band.-

1HQ

(Invercargill).

A Correction N our announcement of, the winners in the last DX Competitions, published in the August "Radio Times" and the "Radio Record": dated August 11, Mrs. 'T. L, Millar, who entered; "for. the Morley Stafford Cup, was credited with: 87 stations. "This should have read, 147, thus placing our entrant second, instead of third. We very much | regret this error, though it did not in-’ fluence the final result.
