News and Views of the DX Club

Answers to Correspondents T.S.B. (Rangataua): No, members of the DX Club do not have to join up each year. ‘The initial subscription of 2/6 is for life-membership, Identification Wanted American on approx. 1160 k.c., heard on March 10 broadcasting what was evidently a nigger minstrel performance. "Brother Brokenshire’ was often mentioned, At 7.40 p.m. a song, "Let’s Talk it Over," was heard, followed at 7.50 p.m. by a further song, "Oh, Gee, There Ain't No Justice.’ The verses were evidently sent in by listeners, The station then faded ont and 4ZP eould be heard.

Chinese Pronunciation, N the "R.R." for December 2 last, J.P.C. gives the address of ZILY as "Moukden, Manchugo (not Manchuria)."’ Man-chu-go, with the accent on the last syllable, is the Chinese way of pronouncing Manchukuo, the name given to the new State formed in Manchuria by the Japanese. The "New York. Herald" gives several examples which may help dxers in identifying Chinese calls. Jehol is Rey-ho, Shanhikwan is Shan-hi-gwan, Chinwangtao is Ching-wan-dow, Chinchow is Chin-cho, Peiping (formerly Peking) is Bay-ping. Of course, there are no radio stations in these places, but the examples may help in pronouncing other Chinese names, In passing might mention the "R.R." of November 11, in which Breslau’s call is given as "Oster Deutches Rundfunk, etc." In a recent issue of an Pnglish journal the name of the station is given as Schlesische Funkstunde Breslau, and as Auchtung is a common German.call we may perhaps reconstruct the call as "Auchtung Deutches Schlesische Funkstunde Breslau," although I make the suggestion without the backing of definite knowledge, as I have never heard their call myself. I have just started the collection of verifications, and those to hand recently include KFI, KSL, 6WF (on their temporary frequency last November), and HSP1. In answer to numerous inquiries in this column reports should be adldressed to Luang Vivorn Vidhyudeb,

Manager, Broadcasting Service, P. and T. Dept., Bangkok, Reports are welcomed. The letter mentions that HSP1 is situated at Phya ‘Thai. ' Recent loggings include 83AW, 2KO, TUV, 3KZ, 2AY, and 4BC on their nightowls’ session -188A (Auckland). DX Improving. RECEPTION here has improved wonderfully, and the Americans are coming in in great style from 5.30 p.m. While 3YA was off the air on March 11 KDKA’S carrier came in very strongly, and I have been convinced that this, was the station that I have heard hetrddyning 3YA on previous occasions at*midday. Lately two strong carriers have been. coming in, one-on KHJ’s frequency, 900.k.c., and the other on XHTM’s, 2BL and 2FC are heard faintly at midday. I have definitely picked up an Hnglish station, but will endeavour to get sufficient data at different periods before sending for verification. On the morning of March 14 from 5.50 am. till 6.50 a.m. the Europeans were coming in in excellent style. On no other occasion have I heard so many. I picked up no less than 50.odd stations from R3 to R7. A foreigner in particular on WTFI’s frequency, 1450 k.c., came in at excellent strength and very steady, fading out at 6.50 am. Several evenings ago WBBM wae calling up a listener in Nelson. Verification from EAJI, Barcelona, Spain, states that their station is" the best there, power 7.5 k.w. Verification from Heilsberg states they are always pleased to have reports from distant listeners. N.J. (Masterton): I have 22 Californians picked up during evenings only. Canadians are scarce so far

-have only one rerified, CJOR-

JODK on New Frequency? DAWNe in the Manawatu district for many weeks has been spoilt by Q.R.N., except during the last week, when conditions have been excellent. American reception is now good, the best being KFI, KGO, WBBM, KNX, KHJ, KGU, KFWB, WENR, WABC, and KLX. On Sunday, Feb. 26, WCCO was heard until 8 p.m. at R6. According to many call books, JODEK operates on 690 k.c., but I have heard him on 900 k.c. at 1 a.m. for the last week at R5 to R7. The European stations are coming in well now from 5-to 6.30 a.m., the West being Breslau, Heilsberg, and Bratislava, and can be heard. Also the Bastern station on 820 k.c. is heard till about the same time, when it fades out.-160W (P.N.). Overdue Verifications. HAS any dxer received verifications from XETM and KGHL, Montana? It is over three months since I reported to them, but so far no replies are to hand. I notice that several: dxers have had difficulty in obtaining verifications from XER and KFWB. Both these stations verified my reports within seven weeks. "Waitiri" (Dunedin): 2SM has failed to reply to reports of mine.-164A4 (Morrinsville).
