Identification Wanted (1) September 1: Station on approxi‘mately 680 kilocycles, 3.36 a.m. Band or orchestra with flutes, followed by song in English, "‘Swannee." Then followed band item (European), and string and pipe music similar to that heard from HSP1. What sounded like American records followed till 4.10 a.m. Here he put on a record for 45 scconds, then stopped it, started it again, and let it run for a minute and a quarter, and stopped it again. At 4.13 a thin soprano voice sang in English a tonguetwister similar to Grace Jields’s ‘"Coop. Shop." This had orchestral acconpaniment. and was followed by a second miumber by the same singer. At 4.22 ‘the station closed down with the only announcement heard. A foreign voice ‘which sounded like an Arab or an Indian gave a call which sounded like "Ba baiba dere, Ba ba dere (static) radio." , (2) A similar station putting on an assortment of American and Oriental items the same night on approximately "755 k.c. from 4.53 a.m. to 6.4 am, Tetween 5 a.m. and 5.10 am. he tried

several records, playing each for from 30 to 60 seconds. At 5.10 he put on an American male chorus singing "Sugar, My Sugar." At 5.380, "Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes," as a band item. At 5.56 a.m. there was a different record of the tongue-twisting English soprano heard. from. the other station. A tinny jazz record followed, and the station seemed to go off the air in the middle of a vecord at 6.4 a.m. Heilsburg was audible till 6,22, when daylight banished all the foreigners. (8) A station on JOHK’s frequency at 5 a.m., Monday, September 26. Music similar to that from JOHK. European on 770 k.c. from 4.30 to 5.30 a.m. on October 2, 1982. A WERK or two ago I complained that 2ZH and 1ZQ would not reply to reports even though stamps were sent. I recently sent these stations further reports, and they both verified in four days, 2ZH mentioning that previously they had run out of cards. They did not say what they did with the stamps. Re the non-reply list in last week’s "Record." I have received verifications from the following: 2ZB, 4ZM. 2ZKE. 3HA. KGER, KOIL, KMOX, KVOO, KF WR. KTFI KTRH. WOC, JOHK, 2ZM, 2Z, 221, 8ZR. All of these stations, with the exception of 2ZB, 83HA, 22M, 2ZJ. replied in reasonable time. I see a number of dxers lately have been giving their latest loggings, and included in these are quite a number of HMuropeans, Surely a dxer if he heard a European does not count it in his log as a new station. I never count a Enropean in my total

log of stations till I have him verified, as even if the call is heard one cannot be exactly sure of the identity of the station. For example, last year a station was heard on 1220 k.c. frequently, giving his call as "Radio Krakow" (Poland). I sent a report to this station, and in due course received a reply to state that Krakow had never broadcast on that frequency. . However, Wilno (Poland) did. and they said that they often relayed Krakow’s programmes, that accounting for Krakow’s call being heard on 1220 k.e. ___Ina letter received to-day from WQBO, Vicksburg, Miss., is stated: "Please extend greetings from radio station WQBC to your friends in the New Zealand DX Club and advise them that we will

promptly acknowledge and verify any reported pick-ups by them." Since September 15 KSL, Salt Lake City, has been using 50,000 watts of power. KGB, San Diego, is now using 1000 watts of power. The Americans are great here now, WABC, WENR, WLW, WBBM, KQW, etce., being audible over the house any night. Among others I recently logged KWK, St. Louis (1350 k.c.), 1000 watts, and CFCT, Victoria, B.C. (6380 k.c.), 500 watts. The latter station was heard on Sunday evening at weak strength before 6.80 p.m. Who else has this station? Would "Ranganui" (Dunedin)

please tell me when he heard KFAB?-

ONCERNING "LL.B." (Johnsonville) inguiring about American on 735 k.c. This will be XEF, using XER transmitter and channel. I have often heard him, and he announces XBF. He has been practically inaudible in my locality for the last two or three weeks now. Stations in my non-reply list are XBR, two reports; 28M, 2 reports: and 3HA, two reports. 165A, Morrinsyille, 3ZR, answered my report after about nine weeks, I heard him on Wednesday. October 5, at 6.30 pm., on approx 1220 k.c., heterodyning here with 4YA’s harmonic: evidently ae is.changing his frequency. My latest loggings are:-5AD. 6PR, KYW, VK2KA and WH and KSTP on their special programme were only R2QSA2 with me. WHAS were on a special all-night test broadcast-testing a new transmitter-coming in at R4-5-QSA4 with only a slight fade. I picked up VK2KA on 5AD’s wavelength after 54D had gone off at approx, 1.84 a.m. Sunday, October 2, R3-QSA2.-890T (Dunedin). I HAVE a verification from 2ZB, and have written to the following stations twice, without receiving a reply, 47, TLA, THO, 2EY, and KZRM. In each case I have enclosed sufficient postage for return. The following I have written once and are more than two months overdue 4ZR, 2ZH, 1ZR,

22, and TUV. Latest verifications 4QG daylight reception 38AK, 4GR, 8GL, 4MB, 8BA, and VKs., 3RG, 2EK, SWS, 3BY and 28R. ‘ A Verification. SR’s report is as follows:-"You were receiving me O.K., but you were only picking up my harmonic, as you report me as on 1000 kes., but I was operating 725 kes. I was trausmitting on 40 watts with .9 amps, in the Antenna-44NW, (New South Wales). . Europeans Heard. Ts the following list of Huropean stattions which I regularly received I have put against each one their approximate strength received during the montii. Graz, Turin, Bratislava, Heilsburg,Mndlaker, Karowice, and Bordeaux. To illustrate the difference made by locality, "Marama," who is about one mile from me, receives Stockholm, Gatelong..and Horpy regularly at R4-5, whereas I find best the Italian stations which he gets at about R2-3. Leipzig’s new transmitter shouid be on the air soon. Has any member heard it testing? One English paper states it will use 770 k.c., while another says 1157. I heard a German recently on 1157, but I think it may be the old transmitter.. Has any dxer definitely heard BAI18, Barcelona? This is listed in sey eral call books ag being on 119 k.c., at according to an Wnglish magazine I-have just received it appears to be on 1200 k.c, On this frequency I have been recsiving a station regularly for the last three months, . but cannot identify him. Has any dxer heard JOQK’S call yet? It is supposed to be on 625 k.c., but according to the information from JOFK by "Marama’ the station on about that frequency is JOTK. beine a branch station, with

New Americans. ECEPTION of American stations has been very good here for the last nights as I logged several I have never. heard before-KF1, Los Angeles; 640 ke; KEFRC, San Prencisco, 610 k.e.; KGA, Spokane, 1470 k.c.; KGO, San Francisco, 790 k.c.3 Los Angeles, 900 k.c.; KPO, San Francisco, 680 k.c.; KTM, Los Angeles, 780 ke: WBBM, Chicago, 770 k.e,; and WLW, ‘Cincinnati, 0 k.e., all coming in well. I am using a aerial, 600 feet long and 10 feat high. Re 42W’s complaint about 1ZQ not replying, I received a letter within a week asking me to join their club, and stating that they were taking steps to avoid heterodyning with some Australian "B' station .-DX180A. Extract from Verification. QGN, Goulburn, power 50 watts, with 100 per cent, modulation, aerial system 160ft. high. 2GN_ very pleased to receive reports from New Zealand. 1390 k.c., 216 metres -I170T. [We have a few booklets giving all particulars, including interval note, of all European stations, price 1/9 posted. Yes, the Japanese letter is somewhat vague, but is sufficient.-Ed.] Americans Not So Good. AMERICAN reception is not good’ in this district at present. The best are KYI, KGO, WENR, KHJ, KFWB, KPO. and KNX; others heard at less strength lately include KMTR, WLW, WBBM, KOA, WCCO, KLX, KFAG, KOIN, KFVD, KSL. "WABC, and KTM. XER heard so well a short time ago is now almost inaudible. The Europeans are fairly loud. but static has been: bad this last fortnight, and has made early morning listening almost impossible. On September 16 I heard Heilsberg announce something about "Konigsberg and Dangiz,’’ so apparently they relay to those places, Bucharest anounces as ‘"Boo-war-ess." Does anyone know the atldress of Mos-cow-Stalin? On October 2, as station was heard from 4.30 a.m. till daylight on 770 ke. Music was similar to that of Radio Saigon; several announcements were made, but were drowned by static. There is also another one with the same

kind of musie, just a fraction under. Breslan (925 ke.). Most of the Europeans reported in the "Record" are. heard here at various strengths. "Omsk," your station on 1040 ke, might be the Scotch National, which I believe operates on that frequency. No station on 1040 ke. wis audible here. Does anyone hold _a verification from any of the Nnglish B.C. stations? If so, which one?-18A. Verifying Americans. HE best way to get American stamps is to send a dollar money order to one of the American stations asking them for 2 cent and 8 cent stamps. Goteberg and Breslau. FBjXCErT for some annoying static, reception has been exceptionally good, both Americans and Europeans coming in well. Lately some of the eastern stations have kept on up to 6.80 p.m. WLW, WABC, and WENR being some. The Europeans were very good on the 5th inst. Goteberg being one of the best. Have noticed some dxers reporting Breslau on 324 m. Afraid they are making: a mistake. I received a list ‘by the’ latest mail. It is dated August 29 and it gives Breslau as a 1.5 k. powered station. Those dxers who have reported this station as Goteberg have by far the better chance of getting a verification —

KMOX Replying. BuLova states KMOX is q difficult station from which to get a verification. I wrote to it on June 24 of this ygar. Their reply was dated August 4, a personally I haven’t anything to complain of -A.C." Japanese Branch Stations. Jj OFK advises that it has two "branch" stations, JORK, Kochi City, 720 ke., and JOTK, Matsue, 625 ke. In all my call books the station on 625 ke. 3s JOQK. but the call certainly does not sound like it, hence my inquiry, and Iwas fortunate in asking JOFQ for the information, as it evidently controls this station. Have you heard this station's call, "Omsk"? ‘The station on 920 ke. is Breslau, though I have not heard any identifying signals from him, "D.N.A.." Timaru, is a bit hazy about logging stations (all respects to "D.N.A."), but I think logging is the word; for instance, my log is on 300, but verifications well under that, Naturally, if you hear a station call you would enter particulars in your log, then set about getting data for verification, but it is auite a_ different

‘matter whether you get any or not. I have applied for verification to 30 Buropean stations this season. European stations seem to require plenty of data, especially correct frequency, before they yerify.-‘Marama" (Invercargill). DX Programmes from 3TR. A RECENT verification from 38TR states that that station broadcasts for New Zealand dx listeners each Thursday from 10-10.15 p.m., Australian time. Power, 50 watts. A letter from 3A W states that on September 17 they were relaying 22 stations; they word it as the biggest ‘tie-up ever attempted. On an eight-valve T.R.F. set I have verified 20 Americans, 38 Australians, 7 Japanese, 1 Siam, and 19 New Zealanders.-36W. ' May Be TIRA, Costa Rica. Y latest loggings are, irrespective of the usual Europeans, VK83LU. Footscray; VK8BY, Melbourne; and KGMB, Honolulu. These I have reports on: Sunday October 2, XGOA, XGY, COMK, and a foreigner one evening two weeks ago heterodyning 2U0 badly. I take it to be TIRA, Costa Rica. nm my non-reply list are VK8EF, Bllwood; 2KY, Sydney; 3HA, Hamilton; "KZRM, Manila; 2ZH, Napier; 42ZL, Dunedin.-59MC. EAQ, Madrid. M4* I draw your attention to a slight error which occurred in the Radio Log ("Radio Times") this month? It states, "EAK, Madrid, may be tuned in from 7 a.m. to 7.80 a.m., as well as 11.30 till 12.30." I have listened-in to the above station each Sunday morning only during the past six weeks, about 7 a.m.. sometimes at 6.30 a.m., but I am _ not aware of the time this session commences, but it concludes at 7.30 a.m. Listeners should endeavour to tune-in about this ‘time; the programmes are well worth listening to and the station comes in on good loudspeaker strength. Announcements are made in English and Spanish, and reports are always inyited. The other session (daily) is from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., but reception has been very poor at this time for some weeks past, and EAQ is searcely loud enough to identify.
