. First Section Next Week Purple Patches from Pre-Victorian Authors

ON Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings of next week, at 7.30 p.m., the first section of the "Radio Literary Competitions will be broadcast from each of the four YA stations, as follows :- Monday, August 15, 4YA. Tuesday, August 16, 1YA. Wednesday, August 17, 2YA. Thursday, August 18, 3YA. These competitions-they are different from each station--have been arranged so that they will provide novel entertainment for all listeners, and at the same -time give: them in tabloid form a review of the literature of -the world from the earliest days of civilised man to the best-known books. of authors still living. The competitions will occupy approximately half an hour on three evenings from each station, each of the three sections covering a definite period in the history of literature. The first section, to be broadcast next week, deals with some of the earliest writings known to man; the literature of the Middle Ages; the Renaissance; and writers of the 18th century. From each station next week eight selected passages from famous books or poems will be read to listeners, who are invited to locate them and name their authors. Prior to reading each passage the announcer will give a brief biographical sketch of the writer of each excerpt, this tabloid biography giving sufficient details to enable listeners to trace the author in any standard referencé work. Listeners who intend to compete for the prizes, totalling £20, should make

notes of the birth dates of the various writers, and any other dates quoted, as these will assist them in placing the authors. To facilitate the locating of the various extracts quoted, the "Radio Record" will publish in its next issue the opening and closing phrases of the various passages read. Listeners may enter for the competition from any, or all, of the YA stations, and students may submit two entries, one in the general section and one for the special prize. It is thus possible for an adult listener to win £12. or for a student to win £16.
