Two Talented Musicians
‘Recital from 4YA ISS KOA OLIVER, who is appearing with Madame Annette Chapman at 4¥A on August 10, has had a distinguished musical career. A pianist of note, Miss Oliver has degrees of L.R.AM. LAB. (in which she was top of New Zealand), Diploma of Eixecution, Fontainebleu Conservatoire ot France, and F.T.C.L. ; Commenting on her ability, the Dunedin "Wvening Star" recently said: "Of the pianoforte playing of Miss Koa Oliver, who studied under Dr. Galway, and who has recently come from Dnegland ,with the L.R.A.M. ticket, it would be impossible to write or speak too highly{... This young lady went away as 2 promising student and has come back a commandering victoress, not seeking appraisement, but as one who speaks on the piano with authority. "Dr, Galway paid her the honour of placing her performance of Beethoven's ‘Sonata in ©’ in the centre of his programme, and this distinction was amply justified in the results. She charmed the audience with her delivery of the Allegro, her playing being marked by continuous impulse and a.rich varied tone, whilst the Rondo, the common _ favourite for its tunefulness, was invested with the lovely elasticity, colour. and fullness without violence." Miss Oliver has had a distinguished ‘ musical career, and, in an interview with a southern writer, traversed some of her accomplishments. In Hngland Miss Oliver passed for L.R.A.M.. Professor 8. B. Moore took a great interest in her and predicted a brilliant rausical eareér. During her stay she had the honour of playing for the British Broadcasting Corporation, am honour which falls to the lot of few young musicians.
Dunedin is justly proud of this talented artist, who, handicapped by" a. severe illness which overtook her whilst a thild, has triumphed over suffering and concentrated on music. She de. veloped talent and appeared successfully on the concert platform. Madame Apnette Chapman, mezzosporano, who is appearing with Miss Oliver, from 4YA, has also had a distiyiguished musical career, ‘She studied for three years at the Royal Conservatorium of Music, Leipaig, under the celebrated Professor Marie Hedmondt, graduating from that college with honours. She recently returned to Dunedin, making a highly successful debut at one of Dr. V. B®. Galway’s organ reeitals. Of her performance a southern newspaper said: "Madame Annette Ghapmen is a very accomplished mézzo. Her debut in Dunedin was attended with conspicuous success, and there is not the slightest doubt that she will be a distinct acquisition to the musical circles of the city. Madame. Chapman has a lovely quality, very artistically produced, and a rare interpretative sense. Any forthcoming performances by her will be looked forward to with the greatest of pleasure". .
