News and Views of the DX Club

Answers to Correspondents

. DX62MC (Christchurch): The "R" system of classifying signal strength :s purely relative, and so it does not matter whether phones or speaker are used. You can easily establish for yourself the two extremes, Rl and R9, Note that R10, & theoretical maximum, is never used, A transmission which is just recognisable as|such would be classed as Rl. Your lo¢al station would be R9 when the volume control is advanced as far as possible toward maximum without introducing distortion through overloading. All other strengths falling between the two extremes can then be quite easily gauged, especially after a little practice. The presence of static makes no difference. It is the strength of the transmission you are judging. 1230C;: LWOW uses 16 kw. DX260C (Tainui): Sorry, we do not appear to have received the letter to which you refer. The space allotted to DX notes in the "R.R." is already at maximum, and cannot be exceeded. The "Stations Identified" and "Identification . Wanted" are always published, and we try to include as much topical news as possible in the "DX Topics. DX1230C (Timaru): An ailas and a ruler will give you the distances you require, . G.B. (Clive): You do not give enough particulars of the stations you want identified. The principal facts wanted are: Time, date, frequency, items heard, strength, and any other details likely to be of assistance. Your technical queries will be answered in "Questions and Answers" as soon as possible,

Identification Wanted

Foreigner heard at 5.25 a.m. on March 26, on 850 k.c, (853m.). I held him for about 15 minutes. HWAJ13, Barcelona on 1110 k.c, was heard between 6.5 and 6.35 a.m. on March 24, Has any other listener heard this station?-DX1250C (Seaeliffe). Station heard on April 3 from 6.42 p.m. on 1300 k.c, (231m.). An organ recital was heard. After three items an an-« noug#ement was made, but static obliterated¥it. More organ solos followed, and at about 6.57 p.m. the local station came on and drowned the more distant transmissions, Volume was good, but rapid fading occurred, Also station heard on April 6 from 6.10 p.m. on 1210 kc, broadcasting dance musie from some ballroom on the occasion of the 2nd annual waltzing competition, 2CH, Sydney, was heterodyning the transmission -DX123C (Timaru), Like D.S. (Timaru) I would like +o learn the identity of the station on dial reading 1 (on my set 200m. is dial read"4 ing 11), and which I judge would be on approx. 160m. I heard this station at ieast four times duting March between 6 and 7 p.m. Speech was decidedly American, spoken slowly, though somehow reception did not sound like dx. On on occasion numbers and money values

were mentioned. On another evening 1 heard what sounded like "KH C-eall-

ing," repeated twice.-

DX Topics

Reporis Wanted by 1ZM. ON April 2 1ZM asked for reports on their transmission of a band recital, so here is a chance for any dxer who has not received a card, Dxing is improving, but static is bad. Recent verifications include: KEX, KJR, WKBW, KWJJ, and KJW. Why don’t dxers give me particulars about stations they wani identified ?--DX64A (Mokau). New Hawaiian Station. N April 6 a station giving call sign as KKH, Kahuhu, Hawaii, was heard testing on 7520 k.c. Some Americans which have been coming in well on short-wave lately include W3SXAL, Boundbrook, WS8XA, Cincinnati, and W8XL, New York-DXi19W (Martoz Junction.) Europeans Heard. I HAVE not noticed any other dxers reporting the Huropeans. Surely 1 am not the only one hearing them? I ean now tune in about six loud enough to enjoy the programmes, The following are all worth listening to when static is not too bad: ORK, 279m. (1072 k.c.) ; one on 363m, (826 k.c.), (is this Algiers? The language is foreign); LWOW, on 881m. (788 k.e.); one on 494 m. (606 k.e.), which I take to be SP5, Wilno, and one on 517m. (580 k.c.), Vienna, Austria. I have one of the latest lists of QHuropeans, but there are so many on the same frequency, it is hard to know to which station one is listening. I recently had five extra water pipes put in for an earth, making six, and reception is decidedly improved. 'They are spread oui fan shape, and radial leads about 16 inches long taken from thém to the centre. The earth lead runs from this point:
