Answers to Correspondents —

thet" (Auckland): It depends how often and when you listen in. However, 26 stations in one week is fair going, especially at this time of the year. . LM. (Northcote): We cannot understand why you receive the New Zealand and Australian stations better without an earth and the Americans better with one, Yes, 2YA were testing on the night you mention. DX52MC (Christchurch): Yes, we are afraid it is. "Bung" (Waikato): KTBI is not listed in the latest call-books, DXi4W: Suggestion re aerial worked well. Thanks, DX114A: What-is re-

ception like in your locality?-

Bung

+ American heard on March 28 on approximately 950 k.c. (816 m.), coming through at R8. I heard "Nobody Cares for My Baby" at 615 p.m. He closed down at 6.80. Also a station (not

. American) heard lately on approximately 1490 kc. (201 m.) at about 8 p.m. [Items heard?-IEd.J-DX52MC (Christchurch), Station heterodyning 1YA on March 24 at 7.40 p.m.-‘Superhet." (Auckland). Station on 805 m. (980 k.c.), first heard at 4.45 p.m. on March 27, A,man was talking very faintly, and every now and again clapping could be heard. At 4.52 p.m, a hymn, "Stand Up," was sung, and after this the station closed without giving a call. Strength about R2. Also a station heard on March 26 at 7,50 p.m, on 263 m. (1140 kc.) at R9. Call was clearly given as WFK, but name of town was obliterated by static. Announcer said station would be on the air at 6 a.m. the next day,

and gave his time as 12.20 a.m., so the station must be somewhere in California. -A. Greening (Inglewood). Station on 1125 k.c. (266 m.), coming in with 2ZW, Wellington, on March 28 at R7-8, At 834 p.m. "In a Persian Market" was heard, followed by a band selection, "On the Cornish Coast."-"Red Bird" (Wellington). Station heard at 8 a.m. on March 26 just below 2NC. Banjo items and singing in Wnglish were heard. What sta‘tions heterodyne 12ZW and 2ZL?"Bung" . (Waikato).

Stations Identified

DX114A (Hamilton): .I heard the same programme. The station was 5CK, | Crystal Brook, South Australia, relaying HCL, and operating on 635 k.c. (473 m.). It was heard here at R8-9 on an inside — aerial after 2YA had closed down."TRE." (Khandallah). "Radio" (Wellington): Station 4 deg. below 2FO is 6WH, Perth, on 690 k.e. (485 m.)-DX21A (Auckland).

A Heterodyne Problem. E KFI and 4YA_ heterodyning. "Red Bird" states that if "Heonomic’s" set is at all selective he should be able

to separate both stations fairly easily. F I do not know what set "Economic" has, ‘ but I have a nine-valve super-het, which A is very selective, and I certainly bring. 4YA in without KII being heard at all. But it is impossible to bring KFI in without 4YA, a fact which "Red Bird’ seems to ignore. I have listened to KFI

on Thursday nights (4YA’s silent night), and often wished I could hear them any night. This is impossible at present, but if 4YA shifted their frequencm. as suggested by "Economic," would hear KFI whenever they wigwed. This is not a selfish request, as I have heard quite a’ number of Dunedin radio fans complain concerning this,-DX142 OC (Dunedin).

An Opposite View. T the last issue of the "Radio Record," "Weonomic"’ (Oamaru) makes a suggestion re the shifting of 4YA’s frequency to allow of reception of KII. I am only 24 miles from 4YA, and I can invariably cut this station out in favour of KI. If, then, 4YA _ were shifted to 660 k.c, (454 m.), listeners would have difficulty in tuning 2F'C, Sydney, 1 much worse state of affairs. Such an alteration would certainly not affect me. but in the interests of fellow listen-

ers I disagree with "Hconomic."

1ZQ Changes Hands The Auckland B station 1ZQ has been taken over by Atwaters Piano Company Limited, and the plant has been transferred to the company’s premises at the corner of Civic Square. A special studio and operating room have been designed, and the company iniends to enlarge considerably the hours of transmission and to increase the power of the station.
