Short-wave Notes
Special Tests-from Zeesen. Wits a view to carrying out special L tests, the Zeesen (Germany)’ shortwave transmitter broadcasts every Tuesday morning (N.Z time), on 19,737 metres, High-powered Canadians. The Canadian Marconi Company announces that programmes from station CFC} will be simultaneously rebroadcast by short-wave from a new transmitter in the Marconi trans-Atlantic Beam Wireless Station at Drummondville, Quebec, approximately fifty-five air miles from Montreal . To start with, all CFCF programmes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (N.Z.S.T.), will be broadcast, and later it is expected that the new transmitter will be tied in with CEFOF during the entire sixteen hours of daily operation. The call letters will be VH9DR. This station will be the highest powered short-wave station in Canada, and it is expected to give reception practically all over the world. Empire News Bulletins. The B.B.C, is happy to be able to announce, by arrangement with Reuters, it has now become possible to meet a wish almost universally expressed by correspondents in the overseas HKmpire, that news bulletins should be included in the transmissions from the short-wave experimental station, GSSW, at Chelmsford (writes "World Radio," the official organ of the B.B.C.), Hitherto the uncertain future of Dmpire broadcasting and the legal status of the station, which held a purely experimental license, have prevented this from being done, but it was always forseen that news bulletins must form a considerable element in an Empire programme service, and provision had been made for this in the scheme for a new station, which is now being carried into effect. As, however, this station will not be available until 1938, it has been decided to introduce a news service from the existing station at once. The Empire news bulletins will be given at 12.30 p.m. (Saturdays 12.45 p.m.), 6.15 p.m., and 12.0 midnight (12.30 am., Sundays 12.45 am., 6.15 am. and 12.0 noon, N.Z. summertime). These times have been chosen to suit, as far as possible, the needs of short-wave listeners in the Far Hast and Australasia; in Africa, India, ete., and in Canada and the West Indies, respectively. The first bulletin was broadcast at 6.15 p.m, on Monday, January 4, 1932. At the same time, in agreement with Marconi’s Wireless Company (the owner of G5SW), it has been decided that the station will be closed on Sundays only, instead of, as heretofore, throughout the week-end. Beginning on January 9, therefore, the normal schedule (with the slight difference of timing above mentioned), will be in force on Saturdays as on other week days. Notes on Reception. Conditions have been similar during the past week as they were the week before, as shown in the log. RVY59 on Saturday morning, from 6 a.m. onward, appeared to be linked up with Leningrad, as during a long talk, which was loudly applauded at times, that city was often called, and a different voice heard as though on relay, as it was not as clear as the main talk, 8ME has been distorted during the last two transmissions, Wednesday and Saturday evenings: This was more noticeable on music. than on speech,
W2XAF each Monday, from 8.45 p.m, till 4.15 p.m., broadcasts a song service, apparently from the studio, where they have a choir. / Zeesen is improving but is not heard every morning, When heard it is at better. volume than for some time, At 1 am, they are excellent at R9. ° FYA, on 25.68 metres, was heard on Friday for the first time for several weeks, Tuned in at 11.45 a.m., which is Jater than their regular schedule, I heard French talk, followed by what appeared to be a relay from America.
