Radio Aboard the Do-X
"THE remarkably compact radio apparatus on board the Dornier: X, Germany’s monster flying-boat, includes two transmitters and a multirange receiver to maintain contact with ship and shore stations. The long-wave transmitter is rated at 120 watts, and may operate on any wavelength between 550 and 2300 metres. The short-wave transmitter for long-distance work operates between 25 and 80 metres, and the fact that a power of only 10 watts is used illustrates how reliable short-wave radio has become. ‘The receiver is a seven-valve arrangement, tuning from, 25 to 8000 metres. w+) oye Special attention has been paid to the elimination of ignition noises by the treatment of all electrical equipment. Transmitting power is derived normally from wind-driven generators, but when the plane is not in flight changeover is made to a 14 horse-power motor.
