Musical and Dramatic Committee

[THE 2YA Musical and Dramatic Committee met on Monday, May 4 Mr. B. Palliser presiding. There were present: Mr. W. P.-McLachlan (Wellington Competitions Society), Mr. V. R. Bennett (Harmonic Society), Mr. R. J. Retallick (Wellington Apollo Singers), Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland (W.H.A.), Mr. J. Carr (Charley’s Aunt Club), Mr. M. 8S. Galloway (C.T. Male Voice Choir), Mr. W. A. Jamieson (Theatrical and Operatic . Society), Mr. E. Dawson (Wellington Symphony Orchestra), Mr. J. Ball and Mr. O. M. Pritchard. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. R. Lyon and E. A, Anson. Mr. Galloway was welcomed to the committee. Discussing the recent broadcast of a concert by the Symphony- Orehestra, the chairman said that. though it was well known that the broadeast would take place the attendance was the biggest they had ever had. ‘There had been 50 resignations due to the depression and at the same time 100 hew ones, A resolution was passed congratulate ing the orchestra on its performance and on the attendance. Mr. Ball reported that in the near future two operas, "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Tales of Hoffman," would be broadcast, and that it was proposed to present a series of musical portraits pre senting different aspects of great composers in an attractive manner to suit all listeners. The committee passed a resolution expressing appreciation of the action of the Broadcasting Company in extending the day transmission ‘hours of 2YA. Numerous’ offers of talks and suggestions for attractions during the daylight sessions were given. The question of community singing was also discussed. : ; Mr. Ball reported on the educational session for the schools on Tuesdays, and stated that the Director of Hducation, Mr. T. B. Strong, had received many letters of appreciation. ‘
