Over the Pacific
The Voice of 2YA JN a series of talks on a tour of the South Pacific, which has. been contributed by Mr. Charles E. Wheeler to the international programme of Wednesday nights at 2YA, the lecturer mentioned that while Suva has been called the eross-road of the Pacific in the sense of cable communications, there has been an even greater development of late years. . Wireless is now to be heard in all directions in that great expanse of the ocean, Suva has a powerful station, and the New Zealand Administration in Western Samoa operates its radio station, which is in constant touch with the commercial radio sta_tion on Tinakori Hills, Wellington. The Tongan Government has linked up three of the principal islands by wireless, its stations, run by Tongans, being situated at the capital of Nukualofa, at Haapai, and at the most northern extremity of the group, Vavau. But even more interesting to his hearers, he thought, would be the information that 2YA sent out a wonderfully clear message throughout the South Pacific, and it. was the most popular station among Island listeners-in. He. had heard 2YA at
sea off Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, and ‘he could assure his hearers that the celebrated "Good-night" stretched all
the way out from Wellington to the Equator.
