Keijo

(Invercargill).

T 3 a.m. on the 22nd, after the boat race, I picked up a foreigner on 2BL’s frequency.. Someone was speaking but static prevented my hearing the call. Also a station heard at the same time. operating on 2NC’s frequency. Announcer was speaking in English, but ‘transmission was too weak to identify. ‘It may have been one of the Australian experimental stations. Another station heard. at 8.30 p.m. on the 15th close: to 2BL. I listened until 10.45 p.m., but not a word was spoken during the whole evening. I have had him since then at different positions on the dial, but .cannot identify him. Strength was equal "to that of 1 or BYA. Would this be

*ZE2KY "on tour’ ?-

WoO. stations heard on the 22nd, one at .38.20 a.m. on 2NC’s frequency "broadcasting a piano duet, and at 4 a.m. .@ fox-trot "with vocal refrain, and the ‘other heard at 3.15 a.m. on 2BL/’s. freequency. Heard announcer say "Colum-. bia Record No. .’ Both were subject to long fades. and at times the music

was at fair . speaker volume.-

TATIONS heard from 5.30 to 6 a.m. in the mornings, one on 1ZR’s fre: quency and another 1 deg. above. Also

another on approximately 1300 k.c. (231 metres). From the first, a man speaks in a foreign language, and then a lady speaks. I have also found this the case with the station on 700 k.c. Two others, one on KSL’s frequency and one on 1200 k.¢. (250 metres), have also been heard, but are very weak. A station one deg. above 1ZR is always. playing band music and comes in very loudly.-

NEW Australian testing on approx. J12i. k.c. (268 m), announcing "Amalga: mated Wireless, Oxley Radio Station, just outside Brisbane, Queensland." Apparently no call sign has been allotted as yet. Also a new Jap on approx. 670 k.c. (447 m.). This is probably _ the

station referred to by "Switch."

HANKS, "Amazon," but that Melbourne station stil] baffles me. He was at excellent volume between 8.20 and 9 p.m. on the 28rd. The announcemen: sounded very much like 3U0G, Melbourne, but static was bad and became worse —

Items heard were: "T'welve and a Tanner a Bottle," "Belle of the Ball," and ‘‘Sergeant Flagg and Sergeant Quirk." After this the announcer mentioned a report from New Plymouth. He is a little below 2HD; in fact, that station "swamped"? him later on."-‘SGV4". (Otako). STATION heard: from 11.15 p.m. until, 12.30 a.m. on the 25th on 222 m. (1350 1 deg. below 2AY, Albury. The announcer seemed to be very hurried in giving the call, but I could just eatch "Melbourne." Call sounded like "2ZH." Also station heard on the 24th from 11.25 p.m. until 11.50 p.m., 2 deg. below 2H). Newcastle. Call sounded like 3PO.-

Radio Boy

(Timaru).

G\TATION heard ‘at fairly good: speakei "strength, though blurred and distorted, ‘exactly on 2Z.0's frequency, just after’ 7 p.m. on the 25th. Later recep. tion became better and I noticed that the .singing appeared. to be foreign: The items Seemed very long, one being a duet sung in a foreign language. Then the announcer spoke. in. English though much of his speech was very blurred "and not understandable. He announced that he would next "put on some items for our Jewish friends." Afterward I heard hira say "Warsaw" quite distinctly. This was followed by three or four baritone solos in a foreign language. After an nouncing that they were closing down until Wednesday, the station went off the air at 11.30 p.m. Not long after | heard. 3DB, Melbourne, announce ' very distinctly. _ Also a station on 73 on-my dial, coming in between 2BL, Sydney (67) and 8L0O, Melbourne (77). It can be heard behind 2YA. during the news ses sion, and seems to be broadcasting a children’s hour. Also another station on 2970, P.N.’s frequency, which is always

very weak.-

"Wovicn" (Hamilton) and L.H.. (Invercargill) : Probably 6WF, Perth They usually broadcast pony races on Saturday nights~-‘Cromdale" (Otago). I have without doubt logged KZRM, Manila, and KGW, Portland, Oregon, on 620 k.e. (483.m.), so apparently everybody is .correct.-*"‘Red Bird’ (Wellington), "Radio Boy" (Oamaru). OZR should

have read 2Z1.-

A E.B. (Auckland) : Station on 277 * m. (1080 ke.) is in Bratislava, Czecho-Slovakia. I heard him at excellent volume at 5.30 a.m. on March 6, and I have never had him as well since. On that morning I counted seven carrier waves between WENR and 4QG’s frequencies, but none of them was as strong as the Bratislava station, which was audible all over the house for 15 minutes on end.-SGV4 (Otago). I@ BILL" (Timaru): Station just above KGO is KTM, and was apparently broadeasting horoscope readings and handwriting. The person making the readings was described by KTM’s announcer as "Wamon, the Mystic Horo-

scope Reader," and then his address and fees charged for readings .were given. I have written..for verification. Is there a station: KROB-:on approximately 1040 k.c.?-Rangi> (Mangawhata), [The latest call book to hand does not include such a call-Hd.]

Logging a 100-watt American. MONG other verifications, just re--ceived is one from KGDY, Huron, South Dacota, -in -which they state .that such reception is phenomenal because they use only 100 watts power. On the morning of the 26th’ I heard the Bombay station at excellent strength A new Australian has been heard testing this week on 252 m. [A list of some of the more poweriul Buropean stations was published recently. Watch the D.X. pages for further parti-culars.-Hd.] . Americans on Altered Frequencies. At 7.85 p.m. on the 18th I heard a station on 1290 k,e. (232 m.). Announcer was reading out names of Canadian and Ameriean people. A gramophone record ‘‘When the’ Bloom is on the Sage" was played, and the call KFRC, San Francisco, was given. Without further announcement the station went off the ait. During the last month or so I have often listened-to KI'RO, but on 610 kc. At 7.24 p.m. on the 22md I heard a station on 835 k.e. (358 m.) playing a pianoforte solo. A few minutes later the call "W9XA testing" was heard and the announcer spoke in. technical | language. I listened until 7.84 p.m., when "W9XA testing, WOXA, Denver, now signing off," was heard. What is wrong with this station? This is the third I have heard off its listed frequency during the last three weeks. Incidentally, does a verification: from a station temporarily off its’ fregqueney count in

the D.X. competition ?-~

(Okoroire Springs).

{[No. To count, stations temporarily off their frequencies, unless they are recognised experimental. ‘stations, would unfortunately introduce .serious complications. Your questions appear to have © gone astray. Would you please repeat them?-Ed.] , Russia on the Broadcast Band. I HAVE not done much D.X.-ing this summer because .a number of refrigerating plants have .been installed here and power interference is very bad on some evenings. I: have picked up most of the "B" class Australians, some of them at excellent volume. During January I heard a Russian station, but could not get a call signi. Speech was a¥

similar to that heard from the shortwaver REN. ‘This is probably the station "Sereen-grid" mentioned some time back, I have had him on three different occasions, but have not heard him since January 31, when at 2 a.m. he was R7-8. On January 27 at about 2 a.m, I heard a foreigner on 384 metres. Speech sounded like Spanish. Two band items were given, followed by the call sign in the foreign language. An instrumental item followed by a different voice announcing "You are listening to KTM, ete, This may clear up one of the mys-

tery stations.-

Wew Australian "B" Testing. ‘ABC is now permanently on 262 m. ' (1145 k.c.), with a power of 500 w., and 4BK has moved up to 233 m. (1290 k.c.), 2GN, Goulburn, whose address is c/o Box 88, Goulburn, N.S.W., pig now on 215 m, (1390 ke). I "f heard a new Australian on the 24th test- * ing from 11.45 p.m. onward on 262 m. (1145 k.ec.). He announced "Amalgamated Wireless testing from Oxley Radio Station. siturnted eight miles from Bris-

D.X. News. ‘A- FEW nights ago I picked up 3BA, Ballarat, operating on approximately 1820 kc. (227 m.), I have always heard them previously on approximately 1410 kc, (212 m.). Have they changed their frequency permanently? I have noticed a distinct improvement in the strength of 5CL, 3AR, and TZL lately gsinee they have increased their wave-

lengths

A Delayed Verification, AFTER waiting exactly six months I received a verification card from Station VK38HB, Brighton, Vic., on the 11th. However, ‘Mr. H. L. owner of 3HB, stated he was sorry for the delay, as he had been sick in hospital, and so that explained matters. When I sent my report to. 83HB I sent it through VK8UX, Mt, Albert, Vic., and this station is also verified on the card. VK3HB operates on 206.8 m. (1455 k.c.), with a power of 25 watis, using a cage antenna’ 65it, high. Address, H, L, Byrne, "Turona," 21 Wolseley Grove, Brighton Beach, 8.5. I also hold a card from VK8KU, Swan Hill, Vic., on a power of ten watts. Latest ate: WJZ, New York City, and KLX, Oakland, California. Could any DxX-er tell me what time the

Manila station closes down ?

Synchronised Transmissions, : FoLtLowine is a copy of a letter I received to-day from the plant engineer of WTIC, Mr. J. ©. Randall. I frequently write them on their transmission, and once at their request sent them a large wall map of New Zealand."Paipo"’ (P.N.). ‘Your map arrived to-day and I am very much pleased with it, as it serves admirably in locating places we hear from in your country. So far we have been looking over that district around the quake zone, and we are very anxious for news of Hastings and Napier, as we have several yery good radio friends in that locality, It is indeed a very sad and unfortunate circumstance to befall your eountry, and we hope the newspaper reports are exaggerated. Hope some time to have some direct information on the disaster. Let’s talk radio. We are going to operate in synchronisation with WHA; that is, we will broadcast the exact programme as WHAF on their 660 ke. frequency. The programmes from their studios will be fed to both their transmitter and ours, both in step electrically, and one will not know, we hope, as to what station they are getting the programme from until the usual ute announcement is made, when each station will identify itself separately. The date of the start of the venture igs not as yet decided, but I feel we will be under way with it by the time this letter reaches you. The schedule of operation will be as follows :-

- Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 7 a.m, to 4.p.m, from WHA, on 660 k.c. . Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 4 p.m. to°-12 p.m., from W'TIC, on 1060 k,c. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., from WTIC, on 1060 k.c. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: 4 p.m. to midnight, from WHEATF, on 660 k.e. Sundays as yet hot decided. Will you give this as much publicity as possible among your radio acquaintances, and ask them to advise me as to what results are like under these conditions. Interested to know how the 660 kc. (454 metres), compare with the 1060 k.c. (283 metres). -J. ©. Randall, plant manager, Travellers’ Broadcasting Station, WTIOC, Harford, Connecticut." Race Meeting from 6WF. At 12.80 a.m. on March 15 I heard the ' gtation mentioned by... "Novice" (Hamilton) in your issue of March 20. The announcer described a horse race, which could. be followed quite clearly. After giving the names of the placed

horses and dividends, a musical record was broadcast from the studio, Static prevented my hearing the .station call. Dial reading, 690 ke. (486 metres), which is approximately the same as the reading on "Novice’s" set. Is not this the frequency on’ which 6WE', Perth broadcasts, although do not expect them to relay the results of a race meeting between 8 and 10 pm. Perhaps "Novice" would get into touch with me if he picks up this stranger again---"Apex," G.P.O. Box 1691, Auckland. 6WE, Perth, broadcasts on 435 metres (690 k.c.) with a power of 5 kw. Another correspondent identifies the station heard by "Novice" as 6WH.-WHd.] D.X Correspondents Wanted. RECENTLY we revceived:an order for a DX clock from a Mr. Ralph (Schiller, of New Jersey. Surely our mos customer! He also requested us to publish the following letter to New Zeal: D-Xers :- "Ralph H. Schiller, of 4 Vincent St, Hawthorne, New Jersey, U.S.A., wo like te have all. radio enthusiasts write to him. Gan send latest hook-ups, and when possible, will send logs of the radio stations in U.S.A. All letters will be promptly answered."
