Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. TATION GSSW announced during the week that they would relay the annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge, which was timed to take place between 2 p.m, and 2.45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. SSW went on the air just before 1.30 a.m. Sunday morning (2 p.m. Saturday, G.M.T.), and announced that they were "going over to London for the Oxford and Cambridge boat race.’ There was several minutes’ delay before anything else was heard. While waiting for the race to start, the names and weights of both crews were given, also the winner each year of the historie race. tt From "They're off," just before 2 a.m., a running description. of the contest was given from a launch on which a lowpower shdrt-wave transmitter was insyed. ‘These signals were picked up rebroadcast by Daventry, the national gramme station, A land line to Chelmsford was used for the short-wave transmission. — The race was watched by thousands of spectators lining the banks of the Thames, and their cheers could sometimes be heard through the microphone on the launch. The description could be followed easily and proved very interesting. Reception was R8, with slight rapid fade, from start to finish The race finished about 2.17 a.m., being won by Cambridge by two and a half lengths. Time, 19min, 27sec. Reception has been quite good during the past week. except that static has been bad on the 50-metre stations. Time devoted to listening has been limited, so the log is smaller than usual.
