2YA Musical and Dramatic Committee

R. V. R. BENNETT (representing ° the Harmonic Society) presided at a meeting of the 2YA Musical and Dramatic Committee on Monday, March 2. There were also present: Mr, H. B. Robb (Orpheus Musical Society), Mr. J. Carr (Charley’s Aunt Club), Mr. I. Levy ("Radio Record"), Mr. R. Lyon (Savage Club), Mr. EB. M. Pankhurst (Commercial: Travellers’ M.V. Choir), Mr... L. J. Retallick (Apollo Singers), Mr. W. A. Jameson (Wellington Amateur Operatic Society), Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland (Workers’ Educational Institute), Mr. Owen Pritchard, Mrs. Daisy Basham and Mr. J. Ball, Apologies for absence were received from Mr. BE. Palliser, Mr. BE, A. Anson and Mr, Hl. Hardeastle. A cordial welcome wis extended to Dr. Sutherland. A letter from Mr. A. R. Harris intimated that the subsidy to musical societies would be continued during the coming year. © Several members stated that. their societies would be participating as before. In regard to the Hawke’s Bay earthquake, the chairman said that the Broadeasting Company deserved to. be congratulated on the Splendid service rendered.

"Broadcasting was the only way of circulating news during the early days, and’ a further great service was rendered in finding people for anxious relatives. 2YA was quick to seize a great opportunity for public service, and the staff. worked indefatigably. The community owed a debt of gratitude to the Broadcasting Company." The following resolution was carried: "That this Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation _: of the great service rendered by the Broadcasting Company in: connection with the disastrous earthquake in the Hawke’s Bay district; and to compliment the officers and staff of 2YA on the zeal and efficiency with which they handled their long and difficult task." Mr. Ball outlined some of the outstanding features of the station’s work in connection with the disaster, and said that the response of the listening public had been wonderful. He thanked the Committee for its resolution and then introduced Mrs. Basham and Mr. Pritchard. The programme organiser reported on programmes, and informed the Committee of the intention to use orchestral accompaniments to a much greater extent than in the past. va
